It never occurred to me until that last moment is season 7 that maybe Robert knew all along that Lyanna chose Rhaegar over him, and he maybe concocted or just went along with the kidnapping and rape story in order to justify the war.
I still think Littlefinger is the reason the Stark father and eldest son rode to King's Landing to demand Lyanna's release, either by sending a forged message or maybe tampering with any messages from Lyanna, because he knew the mad king would consider them traitors just for the demand, and the barrier keeping him from Catelyn would be gone. That and the humiliation he suffered from his challenge for Catelyn's hand would have still been pretty fresh. He didn't plan on Ned marrying Cat out of honor. Maybe Cat was preggers by her original fiance, marrying to Ned would have be the automatic solution.
