Content content content! Hollywood studios are blowing the roof off the place with new movies, shows and miniseries. Let’s look at a few of the hottest trailers and teasers to come out over the past few days, starting with our first look at The Penguin, a spinoff from Robert Pattinson’s The Batman movie:
The Penguin features the return of Colin Farrell as the iconic Batman villain, covered under about eight pounds of makeup and prosthetics, not to mention a Sopranos gangster accent. This show will chronicle the rise of the Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot, to the top of Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
The teaser advertises the show as the next chapter in “The Batman saga,” which reeks of cinematic universe building and makes me a little uncomfortable, but the show looks fun. The Penguin comes out on Max (they dropped the “HBO” from “HBO Max” so it’s just “Max” now) sometime next year.
Sylvester Stallone and Nathan Fillion feature in new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3
Switching from DC to Marvel, we have a new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3, the final film in James Gunn’s wacky superhero trilogy. Watch below:
This new trailer features appearances from Sylvester Stallone — who played the space pirate leader Stakar Ogord in Vol. 2 — and Nathan Fillion, who shows up around the 00:40 mark wearing what looks like…a suit made of bread? What is that?
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 comes out in theaters on May 5.
Watch the trailer for the John Wick spinoff The Continental
Leaving superheroes behind, Peacock is mounting a John Wick miniseries called The Continental, named after the full-service hotel for assassins for the Keanu Reeves movie series. This new “three-part event” is set in the 1970s, so don’t expect Reeves to show up. Looks cool, though:
This teaser doesn’t give us much idea of what the show is about. It’s mostly just stylish, but style is a huge part of what defines the John Wick series, so that’s fine by me.
The Continental: From The World of John Wick (is that really gonna be the full title?) premieres on Peacock in this September.
Jodie Foster stars in trailer for True Detective season 4: Night Country
Finally, Academy Award winner Jodie Foster stars in the latest season of HBO’s moody crime show True Detective. This time the story is set in Alaska, where the nights can last for months in some places. Spooky, no?
Foster plays a detective who teams up with a younger officer named Kali Reis to solve a case. True Detective: Night Country premieres on HBO and Max sometime this year.
