Each week, HBO delivers a new episode of Game of Thrones. And each week, it releases the storyboard behind some sequence from that episode on its Making Game of Thrones blog. This week, we have a two-fer.
First, check out how the pre-visualization wizards at HBO envisioned Jon Snow and Davos Seaworth being knocked on their asses by a flyover from Drogon, the biggest and deadliest of Daenerys’ children. First, the pair of them make their way up the long winding stair to the front gate of Dragonstone:
Everything seems innocent…until several tons of winged death rockets through the air over their heads.
Hit the deck, Snow! Hit the deck! And of course, notice that Tyrion and the rest of Dany’s retinue are standing perfectly still, just as in the finished product.
Finally, Jon does what anyone else would do, which is look up and go, “The f*** was that?”
See how it comes to the finished scene below.
Everything seems about in place, except there are fewer shots from behind the group.
And this week, HBO released a bonus storyboard on the Game of Thrones Instagram page. This one shows the original conception for the scene where Grey Worm and his 10-or-so good men snuck into Casterly Rock via Tyrion’s secret hooker passage.
Again, the scene was adapted pretty much as storyboarded.
Although the tunnel looks cleaner in the storyboard version. Poor Grey Worm.
As a bonus, check out Robert Ball’s Beautiful Death illustration for “The Queen’s Justice.” Naturally, this one is patterned around Olenna’s final moments.
Yep, that’ll do it.
