WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story has a lot going for it. To start, people love Weird Al Yankovic, the parody artist who’s been making tongue-in-cheek hits like “Eat It” and “White & Nerdy” for literally decades, having come onto the music scene with 1985 album Dare to be Stupid and never really leaving.
That would enough to sell the movie, but then you hear that Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter himself, is going to play Weird Al? Now it’s looking like a must-see, just for the curiosity factor alone.
And more awesome news comes out today, as Cinema Blend reports that Evan Rachel Wood, best known as the robot rebel Dolores Abernathy on Westworld, will play a young Madonna, and they have photographic proof:
Oh my god, she looks perfect. The dirty blonde hair, the overabundance of necklaces and bracelets, the mole…this is peak early Madonna, around the time of “Like a Virgin.” And that makes sense, since Weird Al’s first hit was the parody song “Like a Surgeon.”
WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story release date
The movie clearly has a lot of affection for the 1980s, which is all the rage right now, what with Stranger Things and Pose and so on. The Office’s Rainn Wilson will also star as Dr. Demento, who’s radio show helped spread Weird Al’s music to the masses. Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss will play Weird Al’s parents Mary and Nick.
WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story is due out on the Ruko Channel on March 23. Yeah, I know, the Ruko Channel; by far the worst thing about this movie is that it’s coming out a streaming service few care about or have, but at least a subscription is free with ads.
