Ever wondered why no Lady Stoneheart in Game of Thrones TV show? Read on for more details.
Looking back at Game of Thrones, there were a lot of things that showrunners Benioff and Weiss got right. However, as the show moved on, and further away from the source material upon which it was based, there was a lot they got wrong. Most Game of Thrones fans who have read the A Song of Ice and Fire books would say that the show went downhill after Season 4. Coincidentally, or not, this is where the show began really moving away from, and beyond the books.
One notable change made to the Game of Thrones TV show was the decision to not bring back Catelyn Stark. Everyone remembers the Red Wedding when Lady Stark met her end. However, in the books, the Beric Dondarrion character passed his ability to cheat death on to Catelyn. Therefore Lady Stoneheart was born. Lady Stoneheart is still alive in the books and Beric Dondarrion is dead. Whereas in the show, Beric only perished in the Battle of Winterfell (final Season) and Catelyn Stark died at the Red Wedding.
Now showrunners Benioff and Weiss have explained what caused them to make that decision. Here is what they said in a recent interview with EW for an upcoming book.

“There was never really much debate about including Lady Stoneheart,” Benioff says. “There is that one great scene.”
“That was the only debate,” Weiss says. “The scene where she first shows up is one of the best ‘holy s—’ moments in the books. I think that scene is where the public response came from. But then part of the reason we didn’t want to put it in had to do with things coming up in George’s books that we don’t want to spoil by discussing them.”
As to what Weiss means we have no idea because as yet author George R.R. Martin has not released his latest book The Winds of Winter. Though there are a multitude of story elements also cut from Game of Thrones which could provide some potential answers.
This was not the only reason for the decision about Lady Stoneheart though, as Benioff continues.
“We knew we had Jon Snow’s resurrection coming up. Too many resurrections start to diminish the impact of characters dying. We wanted to keep our powder dry for that.”
Hmm, yet, the Beric Dondarrion resurrection happens far before that point in the show. So I’m not sure that explanation makes as much sense to me as the first. Oh well, there is a third reason, as Benioff explains.
“Catelyn’s last moment was so fantastic, and Michelle is such a great actress, to bring her back as a zombie who doesn’t speak felt like diminishing returns.”
Okay, this is another explanation I can comprehend. However, was it. In hindsight, a wise choice when all is said and done? Well, I can’t answer that until Martin finishes his books. Once we can see the whole story from start to finish, maybe we can see where Benioff and Weiss went wrong. However, one thing is for sure. Whatever Benioff and Weiss had planned, they rushed that damned ending and destroyed the character arc of Jaime Lannister in the process.
