Game of Thrones series 8 filming may have wrapped, but Sophie Turner isn’t giving up living in a fantasy world just yet.
The 23-year-old actress, who plays feminist icon Sansa Stark in the cult HBO drama, has transformed into an ethereal warrior to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK.
Dressed in some of the SS19’s most beautiful pieces, including a stunning white and silver gown and a soft pale green embellished maxi dress, Sophie posed for the fairytale-like photos bathed in spring sunshine with a cast of magical creatures at her side.
A white horse is seen bolting behind her on the cover, while – in another shot – she cosies up to a dog.
In the accompanying interview, Sophie says she’s grieving the finale of Game of Thrones just the like the rest of us.
‘I’m just coming to terms with it right now, it’s like a death in the family,’ she said. ‘I’m losing the character I’ve played so long.’
She says the show has sparked a new-found interest in activism.
‘Initially, I didn’t feel there was anything that stayed with me from all the things Sansa went through,’ she explained. ‘But though I think it hasn’t affected me emotionally, I did start thinking about the domestic abuse and rape, and it spurred this little part of me that might be an activist.’
Her latest project is the X-Men film spin-off Dark Phoenix – the plot for which has also stayed with her.
She said: ‘The biggest thing I took away from this movie is what mental health problems can do to family and friends and how people can walk away from you because it’s too painful to see. I have had a lot of people close to me who have struggled with their mental health, including myself, so it’s something I’m really passionate about.
‘In the US, they are more willing to talk about their emotions. Or at least, more willing to talk about mental health. In the UK, we have the mentality of “chin up, get on with it, you’ll be fine”.’
She also opened up about ‘learning to love’ her ‘bumpy nose’, the #MeToo movement (‘I’ve never had anything as extreme as these awful Weinstein cases’) and Kit Harington, who plays her brother Jon Snow in GoT, being paid more than her.
‘He got more money than me, but he had a bigger storyline,’ she told the magazine. ‘And for the last series, he had something crazy like 70 night shoots, and I didn’t have that many. I was like, “You know what… you keep that money”.’
Sophie’s now planning her to marry her fiance of two years Joe Jonas. But she won’t be opting for a lavish, fairytale affair like Joe’s brother Nick’s 2018 nuptials to Priyanka Chopra.
‘We’re trying to keep it [the wedding] as low-key as possible’, she said. ‘So it’s more of an intimate thing.’
The May issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on sale on Thursday 4 April 2019
