Here’s another sign that Game of Thrones is coming to a close: Sophie Turner, Westeros’ own Sansa Stark, got a sweet direwolf tattoo during a recent trip to Sydney, complete with an inscription: “The pack survives.” Tattoo artist Lauren Winzer posted a picture of it and name-checked Turner in the caption:
“The pack survives” is a bit of wisdom from Ned Stark. Sansa and Arya recalled his words together when they made peace on the battlements of Winterfell at the end of season 7. “In winter we must protect ourselves. Look after one another. When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”
A wistful quote makes for a wistful tattoo. Indications are that Sophie Turner finished filming her final scenes a few weeks back, so we can’t help but read this as a way for her to memorialize her experience on the show.
It’s not uncommon for actors to get these kind of tattoos as the big movie or TV project they’ve devoted years of their life to winds down. For example, the members of the Fellowship of the Ring got a matching tattoo when Lord of the Rings wrapped: the number nine in Elvish. (Except Jonathan Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli, but his stunt double stepped in for him.) And actually, Turner already got a matching tattoo with Maisie Williams (Arya): “07.08.09,” the day the both of them were hired to be on Thrones.
That said, the direwolf tattoo is way cooler. If the Stark children are going to matching tattoos, I vote for that one.
Speaking of the Stark kids, one of them — Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) — is appearing at the Denver Comic Con this weekend. We’re guessing he’s done with shooting, too.
Also at the Colorado Convention Center will be Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo). Not a bad lineup. You can get tickets here.
Before we go, let’s check in real quickly with Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), who’s modeling her face off in celebration of a new book about fashion…
…and Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), who looks significantly less intimidating than he does on Game of Thrones after strapping a a felt unicorn to his torso:
I guess there’s no way to look intimidating wearing that, but if anybody could pull it off, I’d have expected it to be Asbæk.
