Game of Thrones has been a springboard for many of the industry’s most gifted actors. A lot of them joined the HBO epic at a very young age and grew up with the show. Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, is one of them, having joined the show in her early teens. She recently recalled her hilarious audition process for the series.

Sophie Turner remembers her hilarious audition process for Game of Thrones

Sophie Turner was in school when she auditioned for the role of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. She was enrolled in both ballet and acting classes when she was three. It took nearly a year for her to get the role. She told Harper’s Bazaar in a recent interview:

“My entire year auditioned, pretty much – we all thought it was hilarious. I don’t know how it happened, because my audition tape was absolutely horrific. But, somehow, they ended up casting me.”

Sophie Turner’s parents were anxious about her Game of Thrones role

Though no one knew Game of Thrones was going to blow up at the time the way it did later on, Turner’s parents were at odds with each other about letting their young daughter into the TV industry. They were well aware of its pitfalls and burdens, which is why she is thankful to them,

“I think I was lucky to have parents at the two ends of the spectrum. I’m so happy I had that opportunity, but at the same time there was a wariness about it.”

“At that age, all I knew was I wanted to act. I didn’t even think about my weight or how I looked, it was just, ‘This is fun, I get to play every day.’ I learnt far too young what I’m supposed to look like, and how I’m supposed to behave. I think that’s how child stars end up being so messed up, because they’re not allowed to make mistakes, and therefore they’re not allowed to grow…”
