Sophie Turner has weighed in on the divisive Game of Thrones finale, and she’s standing firmly by her character’s arc. In an exclusive interview with The Direct, the actress revealed that while almost every other cast member left Season 8 feeling shortchanged, she was genuinely satisfied with how Sansa Stark ended up as the independent Queen of the North.

Quick read:

  • Sophie Turner was “very happy” with Sansa’s ending while others weren’t satisfied with theirs.

  • She’d only return for a sequel if HBO shows her a compelling script worth revisiting.

  • HBO is developing multiple Game of Thrones sequels, though details on Sansa’s potential role remain unclear.

Sophie Turner defends Sansa’s ending while others didn’t get so lucky

Sophie Turner spoke candidly about her perspective on the widely criticized Season 8 finale, acknowledging the general fan and cast sentiment that the ending disappointed most of the show’s characters. “I feel that I was very happy with the way Sansa ended her story in ‘Game of Thrones,’ and no one else was really happy with their ending. I feel like I got a good one, and so I don’t know if I could revisit it,” she said.

Her point carries weight: Sansa’s trajectory from abuse victim to political player to ruling the North independently stands as one of the few character arcs that completed a genuine journey. While other endings—like Daenerys’s sudden turn to villainy or Jon Snow’s exile beyond the Wall—sparked backlash from fans and cast members alike, Sansa’s ascension felt earned. Turner’s gratitude for that narrative outcome is palpable, and it hints at why she’s cautious about returning to the character.

“Would have to see a script” before considering a sequel return

That caution became clear when asked whether she’d be interested in reprising Sansa in one of the Game of Thrones sequels that George R.R. Martin recently confirmed are in development at HBO. Turner’s answer was measured: yes, but only under the right circumstances. “Maybe it would be an utter joy, or maybe it would be trying to cling on to something that was magic back in the day that can’t be recreated. I would have to see a script,” she explained.

The hesitation is understandable. Sansa’s story feels complete as Queen in the North, and any return would risk undoing years of character development or forcing unnecessary drama into an already satisfying conclusion. Turner appears keenly aware of the danger in chasing past glory—and the script would have to be genuinely exceptional for her to chance tarnishing what she sees as a rare Game of Thrones success story.
