Sophie Turner spent a couple of years with really itchy, really greasy, unwashed hair for Game Of Thrones. A couple of years, people. Years.
The Sansa Stark actress has revealed how she was asked to stop washing her hair during Season 5 of the show for a more authentically gritty look, and it’s pretty grim.
Speaking to InStyle magazine this week, 22-year-old Sophie confirmed the rumours that actors were expected to leave their hair dirty for the mythical drama and shared her relief that she was later granted permission to wear a wig.
‘For the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl,’ Sophie explained.
‘Towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting. Now I wear a wig so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair.’
Sophie said the experience was ‘really itchy’ and called it ‘disgusting’ when paper particles from the on-set snow machines would get ‘stuck in the grease’ of her hair.
Suddenly, we don’t feel so sad for the actors to have wrapped Game Of Thrones for good.
Sophie has previously revealed how dying her hair from red back to her natural blonde during filming almost ‘destroyed her hair’.
It was at this turning point that Sophie had to start wearing a wig to play Sansa because she claims that if she’d dyed it back to red it would have fallen out.
However on-screen, the character’s hair evolution has also reflected her change in status throughout the eight seasons.
Speaking to Refinery29, Sophie previously said: ‘Sansa’s hair is constantly reflecting the people she’s learning from, or mimicking, or inspired by at the time.
‘When she’s Cersei’s prisoner, and she’s kind of absorbing all the manipulative techniques, it’s reflected in her hairstyle, and when she’s finding the spirit of Margaery in herself, she wears her hair like Margaery.’
But with the final season just around the corner, April 14th to be precise, and filming all wrapped up, Sophie can finally embrace her own haircare goals.
The actress signed up to be the new face of Wella Professionals in 2017 and her hair looks all kinds of glorious.
