You never know what’s going to catch on, do you? Back in 2011, who could have predicted that a fantasy show about dragons and court politics called Game of Thrones was going to become a pop cultural phenomenon? And this year, who could have foreseen that Squid Game, a Korean language Netflix drama about a group of people taken to mysterious island where they compete in deadly games in exchange for a cash prize, would take the world by storm?

But that’s what happened, and now all eyes are on creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to see if he’s going to make a second season. “Of course there is talk,” he told The Guardian last month. “That’s inevitable because it’s been such a success. I am considering it. I have a very high-level picture in my mind, but I’m not going to work on it straight away. There’s a film I really want to make. I’m thinking about which to do first. I’m going to talk to Netflix.”

What a difference a couple of weeks make. Speaking to the Associated Press, Hwang Dong-hyuk sounded much more confident. “So, there’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season,” he said. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice.

But, I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.

Is Squid Game getting a season 2?

The first season of Squid Game ends with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) starting looking into who’s behind the Squid Games, which could be the start of a journey to putting a stop to them. That seems like a natural place to take season 2.

As for when we might get to see Squid Game season 2, that’s anyone’s guess, although with so many people tuning in they have an incentive to do is sooner rather than later.
