The quarterstaff is often underestimated but it packs a serious wallop. Can a swordsman even block it? We tested it to find out.

Don't fight polearms with a sword and no armor or shield. Two handed swords aren't even used in a military context in any real quantity before plate harness, the harness is needed to contextualize the longsword in a military setting.
They don't call the Spear the "King of Weapons" for nothing.
Do you ever practice with warhammers? Id like to see a video on them if you would do it.

I spy a Parry King shield…
That guy is using an oversized toothpick! Give him a proper sword!
With the one handed sword, can you deflect the staff, and then grab it with your free hand, and control the staff?
In theory, your opponent would yank the staff away, and with the rubber band, you let go and they stumble(opportunity to strike). Or they would let go of the staff and be weaponless.
Is it possible to do that?
Could you do the same with a kanabo? 🙂
I would still be worried abut it being grabbed. I mean if I tried to grab the staff it's would probably break my hand, but it could always happen right after a swing of the staff when it loses its energy.
Please do a staff vs armor dummy (and helmet) since ok what if you would hit his head all this time, would it actually do anything tho 😛
good proof why swords are secondary weapons, great video
Even though I'm not a sword fanboy, I really appreciate fictions that combines sword with something else like another weapon or magic. Even before I was introduced to one of HEMA practitioners I never believed swords are be all end all of all fighting scenarios because I knew everything has pros and cons. So I've always been fond of a hybrid fighter like a Witcher. Not only it makes more sense than someone fighting with only his/her sword because it compensates for shortcomings of the weapon, but it always amounts to interesting and creative fighting sequences while preserving the coolness factor of a sword.
I wouldn't doubt they would be better off using pole arms instead of a regular sword when they get an opportunity to do so, but that's only if their only solution for their goals was to fight.
and here i am sitting and listening to music, and suddenly "sabaton – rorke's drift" starts playing….
how the hell does a zulu shield work? it's leather, and that vertical stick doesn't seem right either…
Hey Skall! been enjoying your vids for some months now and i like your reviews :)) Im an archer/swordsman from Venezuela ^^ i practice most of the time with a staff, i think it has the best counter attacks against most sword users. its simple and quite surprising. I dont practice with a staff just to look cool swinging at full speed and jumping around, i like to analyse combat situations with my apprentices. I would like it if you would follow me on IG man! —- @wolouu —-
Until the firearm started taking over warfare, the spear never really lost its place. Almost every major combat force had some kind of pole arm of similar design.
What about grabbing it after a block
here's a question, when he got in measure after deflecting and was able to hit your leg or shoulder would it be potentially possible in a one on one situation(not a battle or anything just an isolated fight or dual or something) be potentially viable to tackle or grapple the other person once you deflect their staff and get in close? just curious.
I will use my staff to kill you, then take your sword!
I know it would further decrease your range but would using half swording techniques help in parrying? Either by having a second grip hand or using the heavier end against the staff.
I love your videos but what kinda frustrates me is that you're not properly using the bo staff in its supposed okinowin style. I study kabuto martial arts and i gotta say that the proper fighting technique in what you're doing is completely wrong
But staff doesn't have a pommel at the end… But seriously, if sword wielder actually tries to go aggressive, wouldn't he still have a chance?
I was surprised how effective quarter staff can be, but still I don't think it always(or mostly) have advantage on sword. If so, why would people use sword?
Does sword have more versatility that staff doesn't? And lastly, just like how staff wielder can simply move the staff to evade sword trying to cut staff,
wouldn't sword wielder can use footwork than simply static blocking? (or is this just to demonstrate not-to-do?)
Try with a buckler or a shield, it migt give a massive atvantage to the sword user theoretically
When I was doin HEMA the dane axe was by far my favorite weapon to use because of these reasons. Btw that one handed strike behind a dane axe head is terrifying.
Just throw the staff.
I wish I could find HEMA or Viking fighting clases in mexico. but there arent any :/
The thing I'm wondering is are you throwing the results by attacking out of measure. In order to block his hands have to be further away from his body making for a weaker block. No doubt a single handed weapon is weaker but I think a two handed sword has enough leverage to make the block easier than in this video in you're in measure.
Skallagrim, do you know anything about lusitan fencing, also known as "jogo do pau"?It's a very old portuguese martial art involving staffs, it was practiced here in Brazil as well, but sadly the government extinguished this martial art here in the begining of the xx scentury.
I'd say stepping inside the staffs strike is your best bet, the force of the strike in a staff travels up to the tip, so the closer you can block to the base of the staff the easier it should be to negate the blow. Also this would put you inside striking distance with the sword whilst making it harder for the the staff user to defend. Although getting inside a staffs strike is far easier said then done.
Half the joy of staff use, is its speed. Rotation, misdirection, standoff, and blistering speed, derived from rotation, is all part and parcel of the reason that a staff can be deceptively effective.
