Steve Toussaint had been training for four weeks in preparation for his role in House of the Dragon, but he was not expecting the level of violence required for the beach scenes. The training he had received was intense, but it did not compare to the actual filming. The experience was exhausting, but it was also exhilarating.

Steve Toussaint on the prejudice of racism
Corlys Velaryon is one of the most powerful and respected leaders in House of the Dragon. He is played by Steve Toussaint, who does an amazing job of bringing the character to life. One of the things that make Corlys so unique is that he is one of the few BIPOC actors in the show. He has a beard and a huge, grey, dreadlocked wig, which makes him even more commanding and impressive.
This is what Toussaint replied on the prejudice of racism during a recent interview –
“There was a point when the ruler of his country, “the Caesar”, was an African man. There are street names that tell you there were people who looked like us in this country even then, but for some reason, it seems to be very hard for people to swallow. And as you said, they are happy with a dragon flying. They’re happy with white hair and violet-colored eyes, but a rich Black guy? That’s beyond the pale.”
