Stranger Things cast got a little bigger in the season 4 teaser trailer, with Game Of Thrones star Tom Wlaschiha getting a confirmed role of a mysterious Russian.
Thrones fans will know him best for playing Jaqen H’ghar – a complicated character and Faceless Man with attachments to Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) and her training after initially starting life as a criminal.
He was the one that she had to declare herself ‘No one’ for.
But Tom is definitely going to be a someone in the new series, as one of the first characters announced to be connected to the upcoming fourth instalment of the much-loved Netflix retro series.
…And what’s more, is he’ll definitely have a connection to Detective Hopper, who was finally confirmed to be alive after months of speculation in the 40-second long clip.
Tom’s new character as one of the Russian sets up the importance of Russia in the new series, where Hopper is being held captive and now completely clean shaven – including no more moustache.
Appearing to be a prison guard at the campbase, Tom’s unnamed character is yet to be assumed as a friend or a foe – but given the US and Russia relations of the time, we can’t say it looks like a positive thing.
After thwarting their plans for Hawkins, Indiana at the end of season three, it also looks likely that Hopper isn’t going to be quick in their line of people to make friends with.
Tom’s role is one of four new characters in the cast for season four, meaning new potential friends or foes for Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven and the gang.
According to TV Line, the showrunners wanted four men – three teenagers and an adult – to join the series. They are set to have ‘recurring roles’.
One of the young characters has been described as ‘a metalhead’ while another is apparently ‘an entitled jock’.
Meanwhile, the adult man ‘possesses characteristics that suggest he will figure prominently in a certain storyline set far, far away from Hawkins’… So, Russia then.
While the time difference is not yet known between the end of three and the start of four, it’s assumed that there will be a time jump similar to the ones between each previous season.
The upcoming series is reportedly currently filming in Lithuania, and will supposedly be the beginning of the end of the show, which may end after season 5 – with the final split in two parts.
Stranger Things 1-3 is now available on Netflix.
