COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- Three years before “A Game of Thrones” was published, George R.R. Martin chose Cushing Library’s Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection to deposit his personal collection of letters, books and manuscripts.
In honor of the collection, students at Texas A&M dressed up as their favorite Game of Thrones character to show their love of Martin’s work.
“We’re huge fans of the show and the book series as well, so, we were already going to dress up like this then we heard about this awesome costume contest today, so we decided to check it out,” said Mo Rugh, a Game of Thrones fan.
Most of Martin’s 50,000 piece collection which includes replica’s of weapons, books and manuscripts are available for public view.
In the 1970’s, Martin began spending time at Texas A&M to visit AggieCon, an annual science fiction and fantasy festival and convention. The convention began in 1969 and has grown into one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the United States. As Martin’s writing career took off, his interest in Texas A&M, especially its libraries, grew.
The library is hoping to receive an official Iron Throne from the Game of Thrones to complete their collection.
