Game of Thrones is among the most discussed shows in the history of television. A blockbuster hit after only mediocre acclaim during its inaugural season, the show gained a substantial following and cleaned up at awards shows. There was one major problem with the show, the Game of Thrones series finale angered fans. In fact, fans were so disappointed that they petitioned for a redo. Two Hollywood heavy hitters don’t agree with the overarching sentiment. The creators of Rick and Morty are completely okay with it all. Now the famed showrunners are using their own show to remind television fans to relax a little bit.
Rick and Morty explores the Game of Thrones finale
Is the ending of any beloved show ever good enough for the masses? It would seem not. Game of Thrones, Lost, Roseanne and The Sopranos were all beloved television shows that were lambasted for their series finale. Rick and Morty took pointed aim at Game of Thrones, though. It would seem that the creators of the animated series want fans to know that complete satisfaction with a finale is unlikely.
In a recent episode, Rick embarks on an adventure to find a dragon. The adventure takes him to a mystical world that is awfully reminiscent of Westeros. Rick and Jerry’s stories suddenly slam together when a talking cat gets thrown into the episode. The pair want to know why the cat can talk. While preparing to figure it out, the cat informs them that they are merely overthinking things, and they need to back off, according to Screenrant.
The sentiment is an important one. Fans of any show that
wraps up are going to feel a sense of loss, but some take that sense of loss a
bit too far. A series finale will, in many ways, never be satisfying because it
is the end of an essential relationship between the viewer and the onscreen characters.
No one walks away from a breakup
feeling satisfied and happy, and the same is true when a television series
ends.
The episode’s motivation is not a surprise
The finale of Game of Thrones will go down in
history as one of the most controversial and hated endings in history. That’s
no easy feat, either. There have been a lot of shows that angered fans with
their finales, but Dan
Harmon and Justin Roiland, the creators of Rick and Morty, were not part of the contingent.
According to Entertainment
Weekly, both Roiland and Harmon
admitted that while they could have happily watched more of the show, neither
were particularly disappointed with the finale. Harmon told the publication, “I wanted to keep this
soap opera in my life. But I knew it had to end, and I was as satisfied as I
possibly could be watching a staple in my life wrap up and all of the
characters taking each other out.”
Roiland
echoed his sentiments, stating, “Structurally, I think it was great. I just
selfishly wanted more episodes. I wanted to get to those plot points at a
slower pace. I didn’t want it to end either. I wished it was stepped out over
three more seasons, or three of four more episodes.”
Does
the episode foreshadow a painful end to Rick and Morty?
Harmon and Roiland are well-versed in the world of television. Both admit that no series finale will ever be satisfying for everyone. While the duo openly discussed television in a general sense, some fans wonder if their sentiments may extend to their own show. Could their statements, and the recent episode of Rick and Morty foreshadow an unsatisfying end for the beloved animated series?
It’s hard to say whether the finale of Rick and Morty will be satisfying or dissatisfying for fans, but fans will have a long time to come to terms with the eventual end of the show. Rick and Morty, whose fourth season is currently airing, has been renewed for another 70 episodes. According to Deadline, the first three seasons of the series contained 31 episodes. If additional seasons follow the same format, fans can expect at least several more years of Rick and Morty’s adventures. There is no need to worry about a series finale anytime soon.
