The Empire will release on Disney+Hotstar.

Disney+Hotstar’s most-talked about show, The Empire, is ready for release next week. It is a period adventure drama that traces the origins of the Mughal Dynasty. From costumes to the look of the show, The Empire, has drawn many comparisons with Game of Thrones. Today, at a press conference, director Mitakshara Kumar talked about the show being compared to GoT.

THE EMPIRE DIRECTOR ON COMPARISIONS WITH GOT

The Empire boasts of an ensemble cast, which includes Kunal Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Drashti Dhami, Aditya Seal and Dino Morea. At the press conference, Kunal Kapoor shared details of how he prepared for his role of Babur on the show. Mitakshara, who has worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for many films, also shared her experience of making the show. When asked if the show had been inspired by Game of Thrones, she said, “I haven’t seen GoT but I think it’s like a fictional, fantasy show. I really don’t know what the comparison is about. If two people are fighting, you can’t call it a comparison. But if they are saying that, I will take it as a compliment.”

KUNAL KAPOOR ON PLAYING BABUR IN THE EMPIRE

The Empire revolves around the story of a young boy, Babur, who inherits the kingdom of Ferghana in modern-day Uzbekistan. He eventually loses it to his enemies. Babur’s character is shown over a span of 25 years on the show and Kunal Kapoor plays both the younger and older versions of him.

Speaking about how he prepared for the role, Kunal said, “What was very interesting about the character was that he is physically strong but at the same time very emotional. He becomes the King eventually, but he always has this self-doubt of whether he deserves it. My character is depicted over a span of 25 years on the show. So, I had to play Babur at different ages. Young Babur was spontaneous, older Babur, on the other hand, would think a lot before making a decision. So, I had to balance both the acts.”

The Empire will start streaming on Disney+Hotstar on August 27.
