Just in time for spooky season, Mike Flanagan returns to Netflix for his final (for now, at least) show for the streamer, The Fall of the House of Usher. The miniseries has been highly anticipated by fans of the horror filmmaker since it was first announced in 2021, and now, finally, we have the release date and first look. Fall is not complete without a slate of new scary movies and shows, and I’m so happy this one will be making its way to our screens this year.

Flanagan is best known for horror movies like Oculus, Hush, and Doctor Sleep, as well as his list of Netflix original series which includes The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club. He’s made projects based on original screenplays along with adaptations of classic works, the latter of which being the approach he’s taking with his new show.

As evidenced by the title, The Fall of the House of Usher is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name, along with other works of the 19th-century poet, which has us expecting something incredibly creepy. Read the official synopsis from Netflix:

Ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

The Fall of the House of Usher release date

As if I needed more of a reason to be excited about the Halloween season, now I’m also really looking forward to The Fall of the House of Usher this October. All eight episodes will premiere on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Why Netflix didn’t schedule this one for a Friday the 13th release just a day later is beyond me. But oh well!

The streamer also released first-look photos, which suggest the show is taking a modern-day approach to the adaptation, considering the characters’ appearances:

The Fall of the House of Usher cast

If you’ve been following Flanagan’s work, you know he tends to collaborate with the same set of actors multiple times, which is no exception in The Fall of the House of Usher. Some of the familiar faces returning for the new series include Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, Michael Trucco, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Zach Gilford, and others. Star Wars legend Mark Hamill is also part of the cast, which is totally awesome.

Ahead of the release of The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan, along with his partner production company Intrepid Pictures, signed a new deal with Amazon Studios, leaving a horror void that won’t be easily filled over at Netflix. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Midnight Club, but Flanagan’s shows before that one were very enjoyable.

Fingers crossed The Fall of the House of Usher is a worthy adaptation horror fans enjoy this fall.
