“House of the Dragon”
Paddy Considine is in the House (Targaryen)! The much-anticipated HBO prequel series “House of the Dragon” has cast the “Ferryman” actor as the first actor in its cast. Considine will play King Viserys I Targaryen, who ruled over Westeros around 100 years after Aegon’s Conquest. The series is set a few hundred years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones” and will tell the story of House Targaryen. Considine is a recent regular in HBO projects, including “The Outsider” and the currently airing “The Third Day.” “House of the Dragon” is expected to premiere sometime in 2022. No casting director has been made public, but you can find out how to get cast in the upcoming series here at Backstage!
“Cleopatra”
Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are teaming up again, going from tackling a superheroine to a historical icon. Announced over the weekend, Gadot will play the titular role in the historical drama “Cleopatra,” directed by Jenkins. After recently winning the rights in a bidding war, Paramount Pictures will produce and distribute the film, which is one of many Cleopatra-themed projects that have been rumored to be coming in recent years (including one where both Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga had allegedly been competing for the lead). Laeta Kalogridis (“Shutter Island”) will write the screenplay. There’s no planned release date for the drama, but fans will have the second collaboration of Gadot and Jenkins coming up in December when “Wonder Woman 1984” comes out (at least as of now). The project has not announced a casting director. Lucinda Syson worked with Jenkins on both “Wonder Woman” films.
“M3GAN”
After her sinister role in Jordan Peele and Blumhouse’s “Get Out,” Allison Williams will star in a new project from the studio. The actor will reunite with Blumhouse for “M3GAN,” an upcoming tech horror thriller. Williams will play Gemma, a brilliant roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a kid’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally, which she employs after unexpectedly gaining custody of her orphaned niece. The actor will also executive produce the title, which will be written by Akela Cooper (“Malignant,” “Luke Cage”) based on a story from James Wan. Gerard Johnstone (“Housebound”) will direct.
“Resident Evil”
Raccoon City is seeing new life these days. Announced last week, Constantin Films and writer-director Johannes Roberts have conceived an official origin story adaptation tied to Capcom’s classic survival horror game series “Resident Evil.” Starring in the film will be Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, and Neal McDonough. This story will be set in 1998 on a fateful night in Raccoon City, presumably centering on the first two games in the series. This is one of at least two “Resident Evil” projects currently in the works, including a live-action series at Netflix that was greenlit in August. Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems will distribute the new film.
“Don’t Worry, Darling”
Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film “Don’t Worry, Darling” continues to build its stellar ensemble cast. Announced last week, KiKi Layne and Gemma Chan have been added to the psychological thriller, joining the previously announced Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, and Wilde. Layne replaces Dakota Johnson, who had a scheduling conflict with a film that she is currently shooting; Chan’s role, like the rest of the cast, is currently undisclosed. Though not much is known yet about the film’s plot, the screenplay will be written by Katie Silberman and will be set in an isolated community in the California desert in the 1950s. A fall production start is planned. Allison Jones is casting.
“The Peripheral”
First reported by Variety, a new series at Amazon has found its stars. Gary Carr and Chloë Grace Moretz have been cast in lead roles in the upcoming Amazon series adaptation of the William Gibson novel “The Peripheral.” Coming from writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner Scott B. Smith, the one-hour sci-fi drama focuses on Flynne (Moretz) and her brother, Burton, who is hired for a security job that takes place in what he thinks is cyberspace. When Flynne temporarily takes his place, she witnesses something that may have been murder. Carr will play Wilf, who, in the novel, is a publicist living in the 22nd century, with the book alternating between his perspective and Flynne’s. “The Peripheral” was first picked up to series by Amazon late last year. Amazon and Warner Bros. Television will produce. No further casting or production timeline has been announced.
“Umma”
“Killing Eve” star Sandra Oh is taking some time away from her TV thriller into supernatural horror for her next big project. First reported by Deadline, Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films has acquired worldwide rights to Raimi Productions and Starlight Media’s film “Umma.” The film follows Amanda (Oh) and her daughter living a quiet life on an American farm until the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, leaving Amanda haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother. Iris K. Shim will make her feature directorial debut, helming from her own screenplay. Fivel Stewart, Dermot Mulroney, Odeya Rush, MeeWha Alana Lee, and Tom Yi also have joined the cast. Nancy Nayor is the film’s casting director.
