There was a time when stories with post-apocalyptic dramas involving zombies had become so common and felt one-dimensional, the trend almost died down after 2010. However, HBO’s latest hit The Last of Us proved once and for all that the genre has still a lot to offer, and there can be more vibrant stories to tell. Not only did it break the ongoing flop video game adaptation curse, but it has also inspired the “I Am Legend” producer to make a comeback with a sequel.

In a recent interview with Deadline, writer-producer Akiva Goldsman talked about an upcoming sequel in the works starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. And The Last of Us was his biggest source of inspiration.

He said, “This will start a few decades later than the first. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-to-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”
