Television giant HBO has been churning out hits-after-hits every year ever since its establishment. While 2022 belonged to the Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon, the year 2023 is off to a great start with The Last of Us. The video game adaptation’s pilot episode raked in a record number of viewers, sitting just behind House of the Dragon’s first episode in ratings. Just two episodes into its first season, the show has been already renewed for a second installment, as confirmed by the official The Last of Us Twitter account.

According to a survey by Nielsen, it has been confirmed that The Last of Us episode 1 secured higher viewership numbers than House of the Dragon’s when it comes to streaming data. During the first week of its premiere, between January 16 to January 22, the video game adaptation was viewed 837 million minutes. In comparison, House of the Dragon raked in only 741 million minutes during the first week of its premiere.
The Last of Us is the only HBO Max program to make it into the top 10 overall Nielsen streaming chart for January 16 to 22, with the rest of the list being dominated by Netflix shows.
