Game of Thrones was the biggest and also one of the most controversial shows of the past decade. The fantastical series was famous not just for its story and amazing CGI, but also for graphic nudity. The sex scenes shocked quite a number of audiences who questioned the show’s approach towards sex. It explored various social issues such as concepts of incest and sexual violence that are still relevant to real-world problems today. Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings is one of the most highly anticipated shows of 2022, and it wants to steer clear of on-screen nudity issues.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, The Lord of the Rings co-showrunner Patrick McKay confirmed the show will be more family-friendly compared to Game of Thrones. Their aim was to “make a show for everyone, for kids who are 11, 12, and 13, even though sometimes they might have to pull the blanket up over their eyes if it’s a little too scary.”
He explained, “We talked about the tone in Tolkien’s books. This is material that is sometimes scary—and sometimes very intense, sometimes quite political, sometimes quite sophisticated—but it’s also heartwarming and life-affirming and optimistic. It’s about friendship and it’s about brotherhood and underdogs overcoming great darkness.”
Last year, actress Olivia Cooke, who will play Queen Alicent Hightower in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon, revealed there won’t be gender-based violence in the prequel as compared to the original show.
