The Story this movie is based off (Demon Bear Saga) was in the really dark/weird period of New Mutants. There was a story of Magik, fighting a demon that was trying to claim her, an alien (Warlock) who arrived during a slumber party that shapeshifted and drained living things of life, the introduction of Legion with him trapping half the New Mutants in his mind, a dark crossover with Cloak and Dagger.
Apparently they are only going to use 5 of the New Mutants at first.
