After more than three decades in the movie industry, three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis has decided to hang up his hat. The actor announced that his 2017 film with writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, a ’50s-set dress designer drama titled Phantom Thread, will be the last installment in his esteemed filmography. The statement, given via his spokeswoman, read, “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.” The notoriously private thespian may not be willing to elaborate publicly, but he has plenty of reasons to leave Hollywood’s bright lights behind…

  1. Here's the short simple reason. Because Daniel acts because he loves to act, not for money. He would act in a movie and get so deeply involved in it and nail it 100% then he would take a break for a while. The movies that are coming out today are so bland and have no heart that he doesn't want to act these movies

  2. As an actor, I feel nothing but awe when thinking about Day Lewis….that being said, what I don't understand is HOW could he afford to take all those years-long breaks from acting: aside from the practical consequence of growing rusty (which he seems to be immune to), an actor stays in the business because he has to PAY THE BILLS. How could he afford to step out and back in like that? Did he invest really well in other businesses? Did he marry well? Where else did he make money?

  3. Daniel Day-Lewis is a wonderfully unique human being who courageously dedicates himself in his work to the truth of his characters and his own being. But, in order to display and share this naked truth, he literally leaves his self aside to become a living character. I am grateful for his profound gift to us all. DANIEL, YOU SHINE THROUGH THE DARKNESS. Thank you.
