It is telling that keep in power in a democracy you make it hard for those that vote for the your opponents. It is the republican playbook of voter suppression. It is also reveling why democracies are better places to live in because there is incentive to make most of the population lives' better. However, as we drift towards an oligarchy (I think we are already there), the standard of living lowers because the treasure is all being concentrated at the top and there are less opportunities for the citizenry to be productive.
