The third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms aired this Sunday, and Egg’s secret is finally out. This revelation could have major implications in the episodes ahead. While the episode delivers plenty of fun moments, it largely centres on Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell), much like the first episode – The Hedge Knight – which focused on Dunk’s past as the squire of Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

Speaking of episode one, it had its own share of standout moments. Not only did it establish the grittier tone of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but it also laid the foundation for the heartfelt bond between Dunk and Egg. This is, after all, the episode in which Ser Duncan the Tall first agrees to take Egg on as his squire. This makes it clear why Dexter Sol Ansell finds it so emotional.

Dexter Sol Ansell’s most emotional scene in the series

The first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms introduces Egg when Dunk first spots him outside an inn. Initially mistaking him for a stableboy, Dunk soon realises that the boy is determined to follow him on his journey. Dunk refuses, and for a moment, it seems like that’s the end of it.

The two cross paths again the following day, after Ser Manfred Dondarrion refuses to vouch for Dunk’s entry into the Tourney of Ashford. Sitting by a campfire and roasting fish, Dunk reluctantly agrees to let Egg serve as his squire – at least for the duration of the tourney. It’s a quiet but powerful moment, and one that deeply resonated with Dexter Sol Ansell.

In the official Game of Thrones podcast, Dexter Sol Ansell was asked about his most memorable moments while filming the series. He shared that he had both a favourite and a most emotional scene. His favourite was the tug-of-war moment in the second episode, where Egg mischievously hooks his feet on the rope and dangles from it.

When it came to the most emotional scene, however, Ansell pointed to the campfire moment where Egg is cooking fish. In his own words:

“My most emotional scene and my favorite prop was the second time you meet Egg. He’s at the campfire cooking that fish. And when I was cooking that fish… me and my dad, we go fishing a lot. That’s something I’ve been doing since I was like one year old. And I felt like I was with my dad at that campfire.”

It’s hard not to agree with him. The scene is quietly moving – not just for Dexter Sol Ansell, but for viewers as well. More importantly, it sets the entire series in motion. This is where Dunk and Egg truly come together, forming a partnership that drives the story forward. Dunk, once a squire himself, finds an emotional connection with Egg and ultimately chooses to take him under his wing.

Following the major revelation in the third episode, fans are now eagerly awaiting the fourth instalment of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Which episode has been your favourite so far? Tell us in the comments.
