Game of Thrones was a memorable experience for both the fans and the show’s crew. Rarely do we see a TV show achieve massive popularity as Game of Thrones did in the last decade. Many of the show’s crew have moved on to new projects, including showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. They are working on a new sci-fi Netflix fantasy the Three-Body Problem, and the show has cast two notable Game of Thrones alums. However, the series has hit a number of major obstacles during its production, and the latest one might heavily impact its popularity upon its arrival.

The Three-Body Problem, a novel by Liu Cixin, was being adapted for Netflix by the Game of Thrones showrunners for quite some years, and it does not have a release date yet. China’s CCTV, however, managed to adapt the novel ahead of Netflix.

The series, named Three-Body, has been in production for a long time when compared to the Netflix version, and it has been speculated to be quite different from the latter. Chinese media giant Tencent first bought the rights to the book back in 2008, but production didn’t begin until their partnership with YooZoo in 2015. They worked together on a film that never got released, and YooZoo made a deal with Netflix in 2020 to make a live adaptation with Weiss and Benioff. Around the same time, Tencent had begun working on its own adaptation.

Three-Body aired on January 15 on CCTV this year, and is also available to stream on WeTV and Rakuten Viki in China. What do you think about the future of the Netflix version? Talk to us in the comments below!
