This is part I of my video series on The Tragedy at Summerhall. In this part I will focus my analys on why King Aegon V went to extreme measures to revive the dragons at Summerhall in 259 AC. The Tragedy at Summerhall is an integral event that occurred in the lore of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice & Fire and as such I am sharing my thoughts on the event itself.

  1. Wait if it was a bunch of Targaeryans (Usually I spell it right but I'm tired Ik that's wrong) why would they care? Fire isn't an issue for 90% of them isn't it? It'd be awkward since everyone'd be naked Yea but it's probably just gonna be like "Oh my food got charred how sucky is this

  2. In hindsight, Aegon the V definitely had good reasons to try to bring the dragons back.

To start with, Dragons were what had made the Targaryens supreme. Their disappearence weakened them significantly until they were just another dynasty that could be brought down.

Secondly, we now know that the Others are returning and can infer that Dragons, which have indeed returned, will play a significant role in stopping them. Given Aegons contact with at least one prophecy-making-character, it is not unlikely that he had some foreboding of this (and remember that the Targaryens escaped the Doom precisely because they heeded a prophecy*). If you know or suspect there will be another long night and dragons will be needed to stop it, that's an excellent motivation for getting some.

Then there is his status as a reformer who was dealing with renitent nobles. We know how hard Dany had it to get rid of slavery in just three cities, which she could never have done without Dragons.

  3. Never play with Wildfire…very dark ending for our 2 great friends. However When all is explained it was accident. No dark plans but just a fire that got out of control. Not everything is "Written in stone". What happened is a bad accident but a great lesson still learned. Fires burn. Dragons were to return but in the future ahead and not until the prophecy was fulfilled. On the TV show they never honored Lord Bloodravens appearance – ONE EYE not TWO a bone white albino child born with the red dragon wine stain on his face…

  4. George R.R. Martin would have surely intended Daenys to be pronounced day-nees and not day-nis because another Targaryen called Aenys would then be pronounced ay-nis (like anus). In saying that I believe Daenerys is pronounced day-nair-ees and not day-nair-iss like I hear so many people pronounced it as.

  5. I like to think that Ser Duncan the Tall carried Rhaella out of the fire and then when back to try and save his dear friend Aegon/Egg. It is pretty badass when you consider Dunk was probably in his 60s at the time but also bittersweet when you think about these two great friends dying together.

  6. I don't believe in the Targaryens have prophetic dreams. Instead I believe that the children of the forest have been infecting the dreams of man in order to guide them to their own destruction. We know that the children certainly do have this ability at least during the time of the first book as they communicate with Bran through his dreams (Not only trying to lure him into the true north but planting the seeds of mistrust between the Starks and Lannisters). Many characters seem to be driven in some sense by there dreams as well as through visions, not just the Targaryens, and these visions usually lead them to there own demise and the suffering of the realm.

  7. If Rhaegar was born during the tragedy, he may be a dragon that the other Targaryns tried to be. Therefore, his children may also be the blood of the dragon. So, maybe Dany is Rhaegar's daughter and not his sister? She may even be a contender for the baby born at the Tower of Joy….or 2 babies?

  8. aegon actually didn't like the practice of incestuous marriage. he and black betha (his wife) made all that was possible to avoid jaehaerys marrying shaera, because it was notable that their children were in love, and they were betrothed to a tully daughter and a tyrell son. the king and his queen only accepted the marriage because it was already consummated.

he didn't approve the marriage of aerys and rhaella as well. the ghost of high heart told about "the prince that was promised" prophecy to prince jaehaerys, saying to him that this legendary hero would be born from the lineage of his children, what made the king's son, at the moment, marry them, another incestuous one, even he knowing that aerys and rhaella were not in love with each other.

i don't know what are the real bloodraven's intentions.
from the dunk and egg tales, he seemed to be a good hand of the king. he was polite to the hedge knight, and respected his nephew prince, doing everything which he asked or ordered. but he was also a killer with no mercy in everything related to the good of the realm, what makes me remember another character: varys, who is a manipulator.

but about the tragedy: it was mentioned a few times in the books of a song of ice and fire. it didn't seem to be a big deal, but in the world of ice and fire book, the meister's manuscripts made me totally crazy about this event, turning it in a really big deal, 'cause involved a heroic act from the lord commander, ser duncan, and we are in the dark about what this man did. did he save rhaella and her son? if yes, why? the king was more important (?), why not save him, that one that he was linked by vows and life? for the king's orders?

i don't think aegon was getting crazy. i think he was feeling pressured all around because he was a noble man who wanted to guaranted rights for the small folk. he was just a politician for the poor and the high lords didn't accept that. so he was feeling worse, incapable to implant his reforms in the realm, his changes to guaranted rights for the poor. so he thought that dragons could help him in this subject. because of this, he became obsessed, and made what was possible to hatch the dragon eggs.

remember also that he told to ser duncan in their tales that he dreamt about the return of the dragons, but at the time, he was only a boy, and he was far away from the iron throne, so it wasn't a big deal. he and aemon asked themselves if their eggs would be the ones to hatch.

resuming: i don't think aegon v would harm his great-grandson. he could be warned by the ghost of high heart about something, about a crazy prophecy, but we know that she told about the prophecy to jaeharys.
he just wanted to bring peace to the seven kingdons. i really think aegon v was the best of the targaryen kings and not another crazy aerys ii.
and we don't know if in those times brynden rivers already deserted the knight's watch and joined to the children of the forest. we know there were a lot of rumours about his sorcery things, but only rumours. brynden's thousand eyes were just spies as varys had his own.

  9. "The Prince of dragonflies loved Jenny of Oldstones, because of that Westeros bled" -Ser Bariston Selmy.
That is the key to the tale, Charlie, not raising dragons. If it was simply the story you had, there is no reason for obfuscation and speculation. It was a scandal.
