The Umbrella Academy showrunner doesn’t really want to ‘do a Game of Thrones’ as they say, and surpass the original source material of the high-concept drama.
Much like the HBO fantasy epic, Netflix’s superhero series is based on a book or, in this case, Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s graphic novel of the same name.
But where Game of Thrones famously out-paced George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels (which are, btw, still not finished), The Umbrella Academy’s second season finale introduced The Sparrow Academy, who will play a major part in Way’s next edition of the comics.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, showrunner Steve Blackman insisted that the close relationship he maintains with Way and Ba means that things won’t go south anytime soon.
‘I am very close with Gerard and Gabriel, so I pitch them the season before I do it, let them know what I’m doing,’ the writer revealed.
‘They’re very kind and they’re pitching me where they’re going in the next volumes, and you know, the two mediums are sort of crossing over now.
‘Sometimes they’re looking at something I do and say, we should put that in the graphic novel, and they’re saying, well, why don’t you do this in the show.’
Overall, Blackman says he has ‘a good sense of where they’re going, I have an idea of where I want to go, but I don’t want to get ahead of them.’
The Umbrella Academy dropped its second season at the end of last month, and whilst it may have set up a potential third series, some viewers have criticised the show for a scene where The Handler (Kate Walsh) spoke Yiddish.
Blackman has spoken out against accusations that it was anti-Semitic, branding it ‘factually incorrect and hurtful.’
The Umbrella Academy is available to stream now via Netflix.
