Even if Gabriel had no ammunition left the gun…the gun itself would make a excellent blunt object for beating Negan to death. This is Gregory's doing. Gabriel was trying to be the better man by helping Gregory in spite the fact Gregory tried to sell Rick , Gabriel and the others out not that long ago, Gabriel tried to do the right thing and Gregory stabs him in the back. If Gabriel dies that will just give Rick one more reason to kill Gregory.

You know, as much of an asshole Negan is, he has a really good smile.

Gabriel had an assault rifle and it didn't make clear that Negan had a gun. This episode was fun, but there was some idiocy in making it.

They could kill Gabriel and explain why they gave him this arc. I doubt it his comic death is too brutal. I think he is there to cause conflict in negan as a prisoner. To show him why Rick is special. It makes sense. Otherwise hell probably die.
