AI has been making headlines for all sorts of reasons of late, but let’s not forget that long before we had to actually worry about whether it would write TV scripts or steal artwork, science fiction was examining the topic in depth. Soon we’ll have another film to add to that vaunted tradition: The Creator. 20th Century has just released the first trailer for the science fiction thriller, and since I went into the trailer knowing literally nothing about the movie and came out with chills, I’m going to just pass that gift on to you. Watch it below, then we’ll talk:
The Creator trailer sets the stage for a complex human-AI war
Per The Hollywood Reporter, The Creator stars John David Washington (Tenet) as an ex-special forces agent who is grieving the loss of his wife (played by The Eternals’ Gemma Chan) when he’s recruited to go on a dangerous mission deep into AI-held territory to destroy a humanity-ending superweapon developed by the film’s titular Creator. Except when Washington’s character gets there, he discovers that the weapon is in fact an AI child, and ends up seemingly becoming a fugitive to protect them.
The Creator is set in a future where humans and AI have already been at war for some time, and if the movie lives up to this trailer it looks like it’s going to be a fascinatingly complex story of people and AI caught between warring factions. Can the two ever learn to co-exist? We’ll have to watch the movie!
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla). In addition to Washington and Chan, it also stars Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), Allison Janney (I, Tonya), and Madeleine Yuna Voyles.
The Creator is due out in movie theaters on September 29.
