Westworld and the world of Game of Thrones are about to crash into one another.
HBO has said Westworld’s upcoming third season will feature its own crossover event, in the form of Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss making an appearance.
The Emmy-award-winning writers are set to cameo in the second episode of season three, as technicians working for the Delos Corporation (aka, the sinister overlords of the robot hosts in the parks).
Both Benioff and Weiss were loudly panned by Game of Thrones fans after how they handled the last season. And now they’ve set their sights on HBO’s second most beloved series.
Westworld has a complicated enough plotline at the best of times, and that’s without forcing two writers to appear in the background.
Still, not everything thinks it’s a bad idea.
It was actually Game of Thrones’ writer George RR Martin who first said there should be a crossover, and Westworld’s producers seemed keen.
“He’s a lovely guy and a stunning writer and it’s flattering he would encourage a crossover. We should be so lucky,” said producer Jonathan Nolan back in 2016.
“We’ve got an awful lot of material to cover just with Westworld, but you want to stay tuned…”
Westworld has already given a nod to its fantasy counterpart; the show included a Game of Thrones easter egg in its second season, when the iconic gryroscope from the opening sequence of the show was spotted in Forge’s library.
Season three of Westworld is set to be bigger than the previous two (despite the show only running eight episodes in total, versus the ten from previous seasons).
It will see Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) align with Aaron Paul (he of Breaking Bad fame) to take on a shady new tech company.
Westworld Season 3 will begin on March 15, 2020. You can check out the trailer below:
