Are the two really that similar? (Pictures: HBO/Netflix)

The Witcher is Netflix’s first true foray into the world of high fantasy, and comes with a rich source material of everything from a series of novels to an acclaimed trilogy of video games.

The series follows Henry Cavill as the titular monster hunter Geralt, who must fight to save a missing princess from the forces of darkness.

As such, a lot of people automatically assume that the show is going to fill the rather large Game of Thrones-shaped hole in their lives. But is this necessarily true?

No-one really seems to know the answer. One cast member has previously trashed claims of similarities between the two shows, while another was clearly hoping for The Witcher would achieve a Thrones-level of world domination once its first season dropped.

Now, on the release of its inaugural run of episodes, members of the cast of crew chatted to Digital Spy about whether the two programmes do actually share any similarities beyond genre.

‘I loved watching [Thrones],’ admitted showrunner Lauren Schmidt. ‘When people started saying, “Could you be the next Game of Thrones?”, it’s like, “What?!”

‘I think people are saying: “Can you be as successful and popular as Game of Thrones?” God, we hope so! I mean, why wouldn’t you want that?’

The writer added: ‘I think that [Thrones] has kicked open a lot of doors for fantasy on television. When done correctly, fantasy is a reflection of our real world.’

Going one step further, however, producer Tomasz Baginski rubbished any similarities between the two shows.

He said: ‘The Witcher is very different. It’s so different. Yes, Game of Thrones was absolutely amazing. It’s amazing to watch, and a great TV show.

‘But we’re doing The Witcher. It’s something else. There is not really a comparison.’

Now that all the episodes have dropped and the show is out there in the world (finally), it’s ultimately up to fans themselves to decide whether indeed the show is the second-coming of Westeros, or something else entirely.

In our review of the new series, we believe that the Henry Cavill-lead show shows a lot of promise, even if its opening act is a bit of a slow-build.

Speaking of Cavill, his co-stars on the show had nothing but praise for the Superman actor, calling their leading man ‘wonderful.’

The Witcher is available to stream now via Netflix.
