When it comes to book-to-screen properties, the more popular the literary source material becomes, the tougher it’ll be to satisfy readers’ imaginations of how characters look in the screen adaptation. Readers of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series have no doubt noticed that HBO’s Game of Thrones has taken some creative license when it comes to characters’ appearances, so here’s what your favorite Westerosians would look like if they more closely matched the author’s imagination…

  1. I really hate when eye color is picked on. Most colored contacts, especially unnatural colors, are extremely uncomfortable and I'll fitting. That makes it very easy for our favorite actors to get multiple eye infections.

  2. I think the changes are what works better for television. You have to make changes when adapting. A great many of the book descriptions would look sorta silly against the more serious tone. Gotta have a good balance, and I think the show found that in its compromises.

  3. What about Daenerys' eyebrows? I haven't read the books, no idea if they're supposed to be such a contrast to her Barnet. But if I was Drogo or Snow, I'd get her to sort them out, Mother of Dragons or not.

  4. What I'm getting from most of this is… they clearly didn't make most of the cast nearly "ugly" and/or "awkward" enough to match their book counterparts. Half the cast weren't bald or old looking enough, a good group were too old, and dentistry is in fact a dedicated medical practice in the tv series. Copious use of dyes was necessary along with hair curlers, and there was a dearth of colored contacts all across the land. Clearly no one knows what do with their beards and even the fat people weren't fat enough.

  5. Brienne, Gregor, and Tyrion have the excuse that their characters are already at the extremes of human looks, so selecting an exceptional actor who has a close enough physical shape is an achievement. Peter Dinklage keeps Tyrion likable (and he was GRRM's choice), Hafthor Bjornsson is physically imposing enough to be Gregor, and Gwendoline Christie is one of the few women bulky enough to be Brienne.

Also, I find it silly that they changed Asha because of Osha, yet left Bran/Bronn/Brienne alone.

  6. The fact that Maisie Williams went through all the extra work to learn to fight and do her choreography with her left hand even though she is right-handed is something that should've garnered a mention.
