Emilia Clarke certainly puts her body on the line.
After playing the formidable Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones for eight seasons, having all kinds of horrific-ness thrown at her – from flames to dragons and death and destruction – she’s now being pooped on.
Suppose we should add some context.
Starring at Kate in upcoming definitely-going-to-be-a-classic Last Christmas, director Paul Feig revealed just how up for the comedy and lols Emilia was.
So much so, she was totally fine with being ‘pooped on’ (it’s not actually excrement, guys) several times in order to get the perfect take.
In one particular scene, she’s joined by Tom (Henry Golding) as they gaze up at a bird, only to have it, er, drop one into Emilia’s eye.
Yep.
‘It was in the script and she’s a trooper. So many people who want to do comedy are just up for it,’ Paul laughed, detailing the moment to Metro.co.uk.
‘It was tough. The most imprecise science in the world is trying to drop a small thing of bird poop into someone’s eye.
‘The poor thing, I think we did 10 or 15 takes, “clean it up, let’s do it again”. Then I made her reshoot it because I thought we could do it better!’
He continued: ‘She’s such a delight. I always want to go “is there a way I can hold up a card and say [she really is]?” She’s one of my favourite people.’
The International trailer, which was released today, also shares with fans an insight into Emilia’s singing talent, with a vulnerable moment showcasing Kate’s desire to be a star.
With the film’s tunes provided by the legendary, late, great George Michael, Kate took to the stage to sing Last Christmas a Capella.
A banger.
‘I hired her knowing, it was kind of scripted she was going to sing, but not to this extent,’ Paul explained.
‘Then when we started working on it I started adding more singing for her.
‘When I hired her I didn’t even ask if she could sing. [I thought] “God, I hope she can sing. I guess we can dub her or something?” Then she had an ad for Dolce And Gabbana come out [where she sang], and I asked “was that you?” She replied, “Yeah!”
‘She enjoyed it and did a great job. She has a beautiful voice.’
Emilia plays Kate, who is a right mess, in this so-called ‘love letter to London’.
From putting hairdryers into fish tanks (they do not go together if you didn’t already realise), to outwardly hating her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas decorations store, and ‘drinking like a pirate’ according to her worried mother (played by Emma Thompson), there’s a lot to unpack.
That all appeared to turn around when Crazy Rich Asians’ star Henry arrives as a Tom in shining armour.
‘You fall in love with her,’ Paul said of his leading lady. ‘The closest thing I can compare it to is Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally.’
We cannot wait.
Last Christmas is in cinemas 15 November.
