Two Weeks to Live episode two spoilers follow.
The Game of Thrones cast could be forgiven for seeking out some light relief after the series wrapped back in 2019.
There wasn’t a lot to smile about, what with all the death and the threat posed by the Night King and his army of the undead, to name just a couple of the stressors its characters endured.
So it’s hardly surprising that Maisie Williams is the face of Sky’s Two Weeks to Live, a hilarious, daft, tongue-in-cheek black comedy that flips action genre codes and conventions on their head and dishes out a raft of zinging one-liners that you’ll want to make room for in your own life.
Williams stars in the series as Kim, a young woman who, after years of living in the middle of nowhere with her mum Tina, wants to see what the world has to offer and heads out on her own. But she quickly gets more than she bargains for when she ends up on the run from gangsters, caught up in car chases and shoot outs.
All she wanted was a quiet pint at the pub, but life, as it so often does, has other ideas.
Despite the departure from Thrones, viewers will, undoubtedly, draw comparisons between Kim and Arya. They both have dead parents, know their way around weaponry, have their own lists (Kim’s is significantly less bloody) and have a taste for adventure, among other shared traits and experiences.
That, coupled with the show’s penchant for a fight or two, inspired the inclusion of a truly outstanding Thrones Easter egg that the fantasy drama’s fanbase will want to watch again and again.
In episode two, there’s a brutal fight between Kim and Jimmy, the crime boss who killed her dad. At this point, Kim thinks that she’s only got two weeks to live, courtesy of Jay’s prank, and top of her to-do list is to avenge her dad’s murder.
She rocks up at his pad, determined to make him pay for his sins, and they run each other ragged, using anything they can get their hands on to inflict as much damage as possible.
Jimmy starts lobbing glass bottles at Kim, before he grabs her by the throat, and for a second it looks like she’s done for. She has no weapon to hand, or so it seems. But clearly, Kim’s a Thrones fan and like Arya before her when face to face with the Night King, she also manages to outsmart her opponent.
She allows the bottle to fall into her free hand while her other arm is locked high above her head. Kim then uses it to give Jimmy an almighty thwack, knocking seven bells out of him and gaining the upper hand.
Williams told Digital Spy exclusively that initially, that moment “wasn’t in the script”, adding: “It was something that Charlotte, our incredible producer, knitted in while I was doing stunt training.”
She added: “We just thought because there are so many similarities between Arya and Kim and because this is a very action-focused role, we thought that so many people are going to make that connection, so it would be fun if we did like a little version of it ourselves.
“And so there’s a lovely little Easter egg in there for Game of Thrones fans.”
