I really dont understand – If Varys wanted to help targaryens from the beggining, why didnt he help Ned Stark who didnt want to kill inocent Deanerys and her child. He should do something maybe help him like he helped Tyrion. We all know who Jon is, so Ned actually could agree to escape plan and help Dany. Imagine that Ned escaped and meet with dragon queen. He's alive and he can help one way or another his familly – Starks and Targaryen. He would propably die anyway but maybe more honorable death. Sorry for my english and cheers to all GoT fans.

He tried to save Ned! I didn't remember that, OMFG he wanted him to serve the "realm" meaning the fake Aegon. I'always wondered if Varys knows YG is not Rhaegar's son or not and he just wants him to fulfill his purpose.

I always thought that Jaimie and Ned Stark could have been good friends, the problem of Ned being so unwavering as to not see/hear/feel what others were feeling was his weakness. His lack of empathy was a key factor in his undoing.
