*Warning – this post contains spoilers for Vikings season six*
Vikings star Alicia Agneson has spoken out about the sixth and final season of the show – and teased that the finale won’t be as divisive as Game of Thrones’ ending last year.
Fans of HBO’s high-fantasy epic were noticeably distraught as the eighth and final series was widely criticised following a shortened run.
For those among you expecting Vikings to follow the same fate – Alicia tells Metro.co.uk that whilst she understands fans frustration, she thinks the show has ended exactly the way it was meant to.
‘I think when you run a show that’s been going for a long time,’ she explains. ‘You’re always worried about that [backlash].
‘But when we read the final episode everyone was just quiet for two days on set to take it in. I hope the fans love it as much as we did.’
To keep fans guessing as well, the 23-year-old reveals that, no matter what happens, fans will have to keep watching until the last minute.
She continued: ‘With a series like this, you have to watch it until the end. And the end scene I can promise you will not disappoint.
‘It’s really beautiful. It’s…yeah, no one saw it coming. There were so many rumours about how it was going to end. And then when everyone received the final script… no one saw it coming.’
The Swedish star has most certainly had an interesting journey throughout the show, too. Joining in the fifth season as Freydis, the wife of Ivar (Alex Høgh) she was unceremoniously killed before making her grand return in season six…as a completely different character, the Russian princess Katya.
Ever since Katya’s introduction, fans have speculated of a connection between the two characters, especially as Ivar himself recognises their similarities.
Whilst Alicia is remaining tight-lipped on what exactly goes down, she says fans will be placated in their curiosity soon.
‘I mean…you will find out quite soon,’ she teases. ‘There was quite a big spoiler in the last episode where Victor joins [the group] in Russia and he can’t see the likeness [between Freydis and Katya]. It’s only Ivar.
‘I suppose you don’t really know yet…but it’s in the eye of the beholder. We’ll see what happens and if she does know something about Freydis.’
And it turns out that Alicia’s return to the period drama was so shocking and out of left-field it even shocked the actress herself.
She revealed she first became aware of the character of Katya when she was approached by the show’s creator and sole writer Michael Hirst at the season five wrap party.
‘[The return] was not part of the plan at all. I still don’t really know how that became a thing,’ she told us.
‘I spoke to Michael and he grabbed me and said “Alicia, I’m bringing you back – you’re going to be Russian, you’re going to have black hair.”‘
She continued: ‘Vikings is true to history, so doppelgangers, we don’t really do that [in the show] – all the characters have existed somehow. I laughed it off, went back to Sweden for the summer and then they came back with “we have the contract.”‘
Well, like they always say – we love it when a plan comes together.
The Vikings midseason finale will air tonight on Amazon Prime and the History Channel.
