It’s no secret that the final season of Game of Thrones, season 8, was controversial. One of the many fan complaints was that it felt somewhat rushed. But how do those behind the show feel about the backlash that the season, especially the last two episodes, got?

Why did fans feel ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 was rushed?
Fans reacting to a show is nothing new. Yet the backlash for season 8 of Game of Thrones was intense. Why so much of it? Well, one reason was that many fans found that the ending of the show was rushed.
The final season had fewer episodes than previous seasons. The White Walkers, a threat that was built up for the entire show, were fought in one episode. The Night King was killed somewhat easily by Arya Stark. Daenerys Targaryen, a somewhat heroic character, suddenly slaughtered innocent people for no apparent reason.
Daenerys was then killed by Jon Snow, her nephew, and love interest. Bran Stark became king because he supposedly had the best story, though many fans have their doubts. All of this seemed far too quick for many fans, far too rushed.
What does Neil Marshall, the ‘Game of Thrones’ director, think about the fan reaction?
According to an interview with Metro.co.uk, Marshall somewhat agrees with the fans. He felt that “it was really rushed.” So upset fans everywhere can rejoice…sort of. He does still believe that the characters all got the endings they should have, which many fans would probably disagree with.
The director goes on to say that “Everyone ended up where they were meant to end up but they got there in a little bit of a rush in the end.” Fans would likely agree with the ending of his statement. Things were certainly rushed, for so many characters. And fans didn’t enjoy it.
Where would fans disagree with the director?
According to the same interview, Marshall believes that “it’s very difficult to second guess [David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] because they are geniuses and they have done such an amazing job.” Many fans would disagree on both counts. They would feel that if the writers really were geniuses, season 8 wouldn’t have been so rushed and badly written.
Fans would also feel that if the writers really did do “such an amazing job,” as the director said, there wouldn’t have been so many unsatisfying character arcs. It also doesn’t take a genius to realize that some of the logic used to push the ending doesn’t make much sense. Such as the assertion that Bran has the best story and therefore should be king. What kind of argument is that?
Though the director does agree somewhat with the fans, he also disagrees, which should probably be expected. Many people involved with the show have defended it since the backlash started, and will probably continue to do so. And fans will continue to be upset at the rushed, unsatisfying ending of season 8 of Game of Thrones.
People would not be upset if they didn’t rush the season. And that, the director admits they did.
