The medieval drama The Last Kingdom ran for five seasons on Netflix before finally bowing out last year. But there’s still more story left to tell. Author Bernard Cornwell wrote 13 books in his Saxon Stories series, but The Last Kingdom only covered 10. Netflix won’t cover everything, but it will hit the highlights of those final three books in a movie: Seven Kings Must Die.

In the film, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) must manage yet another difficult king in the form of Æthelstan (Harry Gilby), who becomes king after his father Edward dies. And Edward became king after his father Alfred died. Uhtred has been keeping this line on the throne for three generations now. (Uhtred is actually supposed to be in his ’70s at this point in the timeline, but it’s best not to think too hard about that. Would the show really be as good if they put Dreymon in old man makeup?)

And then there’s the prophecy about seven kings who must die in order for England to be united, something that line of kings has been working towards the whole series. You can bet they won’t achieve their goal without a lot of bloodshed. Watch the trailer below:

When does The Last Kingdom movie come out?

On the whole, I wish that there was one more season of The Last Kingdom to cover Books 11 and 12, and maybe a movie to adapt the final novel. But at least Netflix isn’t keeping us hanging.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die drops on Netflix on April 14.
