When showrunners adapt beloved source material, they often find themselves walking a tightrope between creative vision and author approval—but Ira Parker (showrunner of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) has discovered a surprisingly harmonious path forward.
Unlike previous adaptations that sparked conflict with George R.R. Martin, Parker’s HBO series has become a masterclass in collaboration. “I love this novella, I love Dunk, and George shares that [feeling] as well,” Parker told in a roundtable interview before the series premiere, revealing the mutual reverence that defined the show’s development from day one.

The secret to keeping Martin happy
Parker’s approach centered on respect and communication. According to Gizmodo’s interview, the showrunner told Martin early on: “I wouldn’t put anything in the show that he did not want in the show.” This straightforward commitment paid dividends. “It never came down to him telling me, ‘Don’t do this. Don’t make this change. Don’t make this addition.’ Everything was a conversation up front,” Parker explained.
This stands in stark contrast to his experience with House of the Dragon, where Martin has publicly clashed with showrunner Ryan Condal over creative decisions, famously calling their relationship “abysmal” in interviews.

A shared vision built on collaboration
The difference lies in fundamental agreement on the story itself. “Because we agreed on what it was and who these characters were and what this story was, it was easy,” Parker said. “We weren’t fighting about these things.” Parker emphasized that Martin has been invaluable throughout production. “It’s fun. We riff off of each other, and he’s only been a benefit to the show. Is everyone going to love this show? No, but hopefully everyone will appreciate that we put forth an honest effort.”
