Among the many, many special effects studios that worked on the final season of Game of Thrones, Weta Digital may have the most impressive pedigree. The company was founded by Peter Jackson and rose to fame doing the ground-breaking SFX works on his Lord of the Rings movies. Game of Thrones is the most SFX-heavy TV show in history, so naturally HBO rang them up for the final season.
Below, you can check out some of the contributions made to the final six episodes of the series. They did a lot of work on âThe Long Night,â which is probably the most action-heavy episode of the show as a whole.
That Dothraki charge really was something to see. A shame about the complete and utter failure. I also love the brief moment when the dragons ascend above the clouds, and everything is suddenly quiet. Itâs weird, I donât think of moments like that as being special effects-heavy on account of their stillness, but of course they are: itâs dragons soaring about clouds at night, do I think they went up in a helicopter and filmed it?
A while back, we actually talked to Weta Digital visual effects supervisor Martin Hill about how he and his team pulled off some of these effects. Head here to get more insight.
