Warning: Contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8.
Jaime Lannister has been on of the more complex characters in Game of Thrones, with many fans constantly changing their mind on whether they want him to survive.
He has a complex history that starts with him injuring Bran Stark to protect his incestuous relationship with his twin sister, but he has also sacrificed himself to protect Brienne of Tarth and has now travelled to fight alongside the Starks and Targaryens against the White Walkers.
It’s been clear that he isn’t as evil as his sister Cersei and cares a lot for other people, including his brother Tyrion.
Now that he’s arrived in Westeros, he is set to face Daenerys and the Starks and confront the crimes that he and his family have commit.
So what did Jaime do to the Targaryen family and why is he such a controversial figure?
What did Jaime Lannister do to the Targaryens?
Before King Robert ruled over Westeros, it was King Aerys II, who was part of House Targaryen which ruled for over three centuries.
Robert’s Rebellion was a war that started after Aerys, known as the Mad King, executed Ned Stark’s father and brother.
When Tywin Lannister sent his army to sack King’s Landing,
King Aerys had instructed Ser Jaime Lannister, who was a member of his Kingsguard, to burn the entire city, as well as kill Tywin and bring him his head.
Jaime decided against this and instead he stabbed the king in the back and cut his throat.
Talking to Brienne of Tarth about King Aerys II in season three he said: ‘He loved to watch people burn, the way their skin blackened and blistered and melted off their bones. He burned lords he didn’t like. He burned Hands who disobeyed him. He burned anyone who was against him. Before long, half the country was against him.’
Explaining his reasons for killing him, Jaime added: ‘Once again, I came to the king, begging him to surrender. He told me to… bring him my father’s head. Then he… turned to his pyromancer. ‘Burn them all,’ he said.’
He was later pardoned by Robert Baratheon for his crimes but he then gained the nickname of Kingslayer, which has stayed with him ever since.
In season 7 fans also saw Jaime attempt to kill Daenerys when they met during the battles against the Tyrell and Targaryen armies.
While she was trying to remove a spear from Drogon’s body, Jaime saw an opportunity and grabbed a spear of his own to try and kill her.
However, Drogon noticed and attempted to blow flames on him but Bronn managed to save Jaime from being burnt to death by dragon fire.
What did Jaime Lannister do to Bran Stark?
The end of the first episode in season one of Game of Thrones saw Bran Stark discover Jaime and Cersei Lannister having sex in a tower in Winterfell.
Cersei and Jaime panicked after being discovered and Jaime grabbed Bran and said ‘the things I do for love’ before pushing Bran out of the window.
The fall didn’t kill Bran but he lost the ability to walk and initially forgot who had pushed him.
Bran has gone on to gain the ability tow arg and see into the past and present, and now he comes face-to-face with the man who tried to kill him several years ago.
