Why do you make of the worship of the Drowned God? Do you think the Drowned God is real?
you sound ill but another great vid!
10:30 – i think you really need to flesh out the Cthulhu reference with an actual quote, at least. the "dualistic" religion with drowned vs storm god doesn't make any sense in the former context, for Cthulhu isn't even remotely a kind god…i'm pretty sure a religion based on the former context would be readily apparent in the madness aspect (where the magic would be conjured for a purpose but get corrupted like a cancerous tentacle like mess taking on a life of its own)
very chaotic neutral indeed, and the religion would definitely have a "the law of unintended consequences" feel to its sermons. Which, i doubt any quote you could find would find similarity with.
Why do i believe this? Because i get the feeling the Martin's horror stories, when he was young, were never really based on something with depth to it…and he's never really enhanced/evolved his thinking on this subject. That and Martin comes across as a control freak – he abhors disorder and chaos (seems counter intuitive when compared to the constant deaths of major characters, but i feel it's just him killing off storyarcs – that he can't be arsed to deal with anymore when a conundrum shows up – amidst a plethora of characters he writes into his books)
To that end, i contend that it would seem impossible that Martin would have the intellectual flexibility to include a religion based on the law of unintended consequences – of a chaotic neutral bent (that one never really knows if it's evil or good because it just seems mad)
Therefore, i conclude there is no objective basis for believing Martin intends the Iron borne have anything but a culture – not a religion – and Martin may go only so far in this intellectually: To see this as a "hey, these guys have no magicians nor priests, because their worshipers haven't managed to infuse their rituals with magic merely on faith alone" (a faith that tilts askew the notion that a religion needs magical rituals, beyond the practical mundane CPR stuff that may seem like magic to the characters)
In fact, their entire religion seems based off of CPR, if you think about it.
Anyways, it's a pity the religion isn't based on Cthulhu, for it would be refreshing to realize Martin isn't intellectually lacking depth to his metaphysics.
shrug He just seems alot like George Lucas in the EPIC space opera but simplistic in the extreme metaphysics dept.
Personally, i think Martin is a lazy writer and fear reading the books will ruin my enjoyment of the TV series (like trying to read the Ludlum Bourne books and intensely disliking the one i failed to finish)
Great video as usual, In Deep Geek- I am fascinated by the Drowned God and "What is dead may never die". The Ironborn are looked down upon by all other peoples and religions, but to me it's the most pure of all the religions. We (humans, and Planetos folks) were born of the sea millions of years ago, and will return to the sea some day. There isn't anything magical as you stated, but they didn't do CPR to Euron, yet he did revive after some time on shore. Death, returning to the sea, isn't death to them, so there should be no fear of the unknown–they know what will happen and welcome it. I do want to see a bloody big old Kraken, but I doubt we'll see it in the time we have left on GOT. I'd rather have someone say "What is dead may never die" than "The Night is dark and full of terrors". Which would you choose–the comfort of undeadedness, or the fear of the faith of R'llor?
Do you think there is a connection between what is dead may never die, only death can pay for life and all men must die? I can't help but think hubris will cause the downfall of man….more specifically man's quest for immortality
I agree that the rudimentary resuscitation is a sham. But there is definitely something going on with Euron -is he working with Bloodraven? Or is it something else?
Two general comments. 1-Since Theon refers to 'godly', it's a good chance he'll take the Ironborn throne (almost a certainty). 2-If Yara promised not to attack the seven kingdoms, she might explore what was west of Westeros and attack any country she finds. This way she could follow the Ironborn ways and stick with her promise to Dany.

Hello Robert…you made my weekend with this vid….I dont know if the Drowned God is true or fake..but i dont think he is a friendly [to the people]god,as all the other gods and deities are there. Also the fans/readers think that the Drowned God is a Cthulhu..because the Cthulhu in Lovecrafts mythology is a monster god with a demonic appearance[like an alien-octopus thing with wings] and its considered that he lives in the deep/dark Pacific Ocean in a city who called R'lyeh…From there..he can control the dreams of the people and can communicate with them when they sleep ..The same is happened with Aeron and his dreams about Euron in the throne..The Drowned God is manipulating him giving those dreams because the Drowned God has choose Euron[the Maesters prophesy] as his champion against Aegon the Conqueror [Danny/Jon or their son in S8]..Also the Drowned God reminds me the monster of Leviathan ..who in the Bible and in the Jewish mythology/culture described as the demon king/ god of the deep seas ….In the other cultures[ The Native Americans Inuits of North Canada, ancient Greeks , in the Caribbean isles and etc ]those dark deities of the sea they had their own Shamans /priests…example in the Voodoo of Haiti…the priests/ess of the Loa[God] of the sea ..Aque [like we say aqua ]they live their hairs long [rasta] and they wear colorful old robes or other old clothes and jewels as sharks teeth, corals or seaweeds with the icons of their god..like the Drowned God priests do in GOT , they baptize their new members in seas water and make their voodoo ceremonies in bitches or in ships…Also the fight of the Drowned God with the Storm God who you hint in your vid …reminds me the Greek myth of the Sea god Poseidon fight with the Titan Enceladus ..the previous god of the volcanoes and earthquakes..during the Clash of the Olympian Gods with the Titans..Poseidon defeated him by beat him with the Mount Etna ..and from them the Titan when is angry causes earthquakes and the eruption of the volcano..little bit similar to the clash of the Drowned God [sea god] with the Storm God[volcanoes also they cause storms]..I think GRRM has inspired this deity from those ancient cultures that i talk in my comment and really their stories/myths they sound similar with the Drowned God religion/culture….he has study anthropology and folklore and he has put those things in his novels ..what do you think?
How're you feeling Robert? You sound a bit under the weather!
I don't believe Martin has written this story with so many religions to promote any of them. In fact, as an atheist, Martin is demonstrating to the readers that all of these religions are false, just as he does not have any particular faith. I don't recall anyone performing CPR in the show, he just spit up some water and started breathing again, or is my memory faulty.
Keep up the good work, Happy New Year.
Well, it is hard to dismiss because of the experience of Patchface and his comments. Which I really don't understand. Maybe you will clear that up one day, unless you have in a prior video. As always very nice to hear you and your ideas Robert.
I definitely feel like a kraken v dragon battle may be coming soon
Perhaps the Drowned God is real….after all the percentages of CPR being successful are infinitesimally low. Brain damage can start to occur after only 2 minutes of oxygen deprivation, and brain death can occur after 4 minutes. Then there's the not-so-little problem of seawater inhalation which, if the patient is lucky enough to be resuscitated, can lead to saltwater aspiration pneumonia and bacterial infection, both of which are killers. If the Ironborn are participating in these deadly rituals, and surviving in moderate numbers (let's say, a 25% survival rate, which would be high), then it would appear there might be some supernatural force at work helping them…..Or maybe they are all surviving with varying degrees of brain damage……which might explain a LOT! LOL!
Thank you for making the point about the drowned god being a G.R.R.M. style homage to Cthullu. Some people put too much importance on that aspect of the Ironborn lore.
I really like it, that many goods in ASOIAF are formed by the culture that worships them. It isn't like the faith changes people, people create and change the faith.
What a fantastic video to see upon waking!
They're too busy reaving and raping to do a missionary mission
If the Valyrian faith had more info I'd rather hear about that
Worst faith ever. Aside from the Old God's and the seven
