With January over and spring on the horizon, it’s time to shake off those winter blues and book that much-needed holiday.

Not sure what destination to choose? Why not take inspiration from the TV series that kept you company over the cold months.

Whether you’re looking for country getaways in the UK, chic European breaks, or exotic long-haul travels, wanderlust can be found in the scenic settings of all the best shows.

From Westeros to Washington State, here’s where to go on holiday this year based on the real life locations of your favourite TV series.

Game of Thrones

It’s going to be a long wait for GOT season eight but fans of the show can keep winter coming by visiting the frozen lands of Iceland.

Popular filming locations include Grjótagjá cave (otherwise known as the thermal pool where Jon and Ygritte had sex), the Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters and the Dimmuborgir lava fields.

Those with a preference for warmer climes might favour a trip to the Croatian coastal city of Dubrovnik, which was primarily used for the King’s Landing exterior shots.

The Crown

In the first season of The Crown, Elizabeth and Philip jet off to Kenya for the Commonwealth tour, where they also go on safari.

A long-haul holiday to South Africa, which doubled for Kenya during these scenes, is an absolute must-visit destination if you enjoyed watching the then Princess embracing the overland adventure and wildlife.

Big Little Lies

HBO’s award-winning drama is both set and filmed in the rugged coastal city of Monterey, California.

The nearby Big Sur coastline is one of the most popular American roadtrip routes and you can also run like Shailene Woodley on Del Monte Beach (the actual stretch of sand used in the show).

Vikings

Inspired by legendary Norse hero and chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok, Vikings is an authentic, brutal and epic historical drama with stunning cinematography.

If you want to visit the rural landscape of this Irish-Canadian co-production, hop on a flight to County Wicklow, Ireland, where you can visit Lough Tay (the setting of Kattegat village), Luggala, and Blessington Lakes, where the season one longship scenes were filmed.

The Walking Dead

TWD returns for season 8B this month, so it’s the perfect time to book that dream holiday to the show’s iconic filming location of Georgia.

See the Atlanta skyline that Rick rides towards in season one and the Bellwood Quarry where he reunites with his family (also a location used in Stranger Things S1).

You can also take the Grantville Dead Walking Tour and see Morgan’s apartment from season three.

Riviera

Renewed for a second season at the end of last year, Riviera is a glamorous and stylish drama featuring beautiful Mediterranean scenery.

The show traverses Nice, Monaco and other Cote d’Azur locations, which are all perfect if you’re after a short-haul summer holiday destination with a touch of luxury.

Outlander

Fully immerse yourself in the romantic and sweeping world of Outlander by indulging in the Scottish heritage that influenced both author Diana Gabaldon and the show’s location scouts.

From Glencoe (featured in the show’s opening credits) and Doune Castle (which doubles as the fictional Castle Leoch) to the picturesque Dysart Harbour (where the Le Havre port scenes were filmed), you could spend weeks exploring and still have more to see.

Narcos

The drug crime theme of Netflix’s drama might not inspire you to visit Colombia, but the diverse and culturally rich landscape is a big draw for tourists.

When you’re not enjoying the beaches or mountain regions, visit the historic capital city of Bogotá or take a trip to the Jurassic Park style theme park, Parque Temático Hacienda Nápoles, which was built on Pablo Escobar’s expansive estate.

The Durrells

ITV’s charming Sunday night drama The Durrells will return for a third season this year.

Get into the laidback Grecian spirit early by heading to the island of Corfu, specifically the regions of Perama and Kontokali, where the series is filmed.

Don’t forget to visit Corfu town either, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Twin Peaks

Mark Frost and David Lynch’s mystery horror drama is set in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington.

The show’s exterior shots are also filmed in Washington State – not to be confused with DC – with the towns of Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City all featuring in the series.

You can’t fail to recognise Snoqualmie Falls, which is a popular tourist attraction that appears in the opening credits.

Death in Paradise

Now onto its seventh season, with its third lead detective in Ardal O’Hanlon, Death in Paradise continues to draw in viewers with it’s blend of murder and tropical climes.

Whilst the show’s setting of Saint Marie is purely fictional, you can visit the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe where the series is filmed for sun, sea and sand. Hold the murder.
