The question over who Jon Snow’s parents are has been present throughout the Game of Thrones series.
He was introduced as Ned Stark’s son who was conceived while he was away fighting in Robert’s Rebellion, this led to him being hated by Ned’s wife Catelyn.
Jon grew up not knowing who his mother was, and being illegitimate meant that he wasn’t treated the same as the rest of the Stark children.
When Ned left Winterfell to serve as Hand of the King for Robert Baratheon, he told Jon that he would tell him the truth about his mother when he returned.
As all Game of Thrones fans know, that never happened as Ned was executed at the end of season one thanks to the new King Joffrey.
Jon still doesn’t know the truth of who his real parents are, but season 7 saw fans finally get the answer that they have been craving for.
Who are Jon Snow’s parents?
Jon Snow’s parents were finally revealed in the final episode of season 7.
Bran Stark was able to look back in time thanks to his ability to use the sight, and he find out firsthand that Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen were Jon’s mother and father.
Viewers saw Bran look on as a baby Jon is handed over to Ned Stark after he finds his dying sister Lyanna Stark at the Tower of Joy in Dorne.
While relaying the information to Samwell Tarly, Bran reveals that Rhaegar Targaryen is Jon Snow’s father, and his parents had married each other in secret.
Rhaegar was next in line to sit on the Iron Throne after his father King Aerys II, but both of them died during Robert’s Rebellion.
The marriage between Rhaegar and Lyanna legitimises Jon Snow and makes him the rightful heir to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
