The final ever episode of Game of Thrones is almost here and it’s hard to predict exactly what will happen between the characters who have managed to last right until the end.
There is likely to be more death and destruction following the events of episode five The Bells, which saw Daenerys Targaryen destroy King’s Landing and the many innocent people within it.
Here is everything that you need to know about which characters have died so far, and how many are still alive as we head into the final episode in the series.
Who has died in Game of Thrones season eight?
Cersei Lannister
Cersei met her end during the fifth episode of season eight when Daenerys Targaryen used her dragon and her army to destroy King’s Landing.
The Queen stayed confident that the Red Keep could withstand the attack, but as everything crumbled around her she finally decided to flee.
She then ran into her brother Jaime Lannister who she held as the building around them collapsed, killing them both.
Jaime Lannister
Jaimes was stabbed twice during a fight with Euron Greyjoy in King’s Landing, but that wasn’t enough to kill him.
He was able to make his way into the cellars of the Red Keep and meet up with Cersei, the person he left Winterfell to reunite with.
The two of them hugged and Jaime said that nothing else matters except them.
They are both then crushed as the tunnel collapses following Drogon’s attack on the Red Keep.
Despite there looking like no way out for Jaime, some fans suspect that we could see the Kingslayer return in the final episode.
Jorah Mormont
Jorah died during the Battle for Winterfell after defending Daenerys Targaryen from the army of the dead when she fell off of Drogon and onto the battlefield.
He took several stab wounds but stayed standing right until the end.
He didn’t collapse until he knew that the White Walkers were defeated.
Theon Greyjoy
It has been a long journey for Theon after originally turning on the Stark family to try and claim Winterfell.
Since then he has been tortured by Ramsey Bolton and forced to do things that he later regretted.
His final episode saw him volunteer to protect Bran Stark from the Night King, which led to Bran telling him ‘you’re a good man’.
He charged at the Night King with a spear, but it resulted in his death.
Missandei
Missandei’s death was a significant moment during the fourth episode of season eight.
She was captured by Cersei and her army after Daenerys’s ships were attacked by Euron Greyjoy’s fleet.
Tyrion tried to convince Cersei to not harm Missandei and to surrendor, but instead she instructed The Mountain Ser Gregor Clegane to execute her.
Her death had a visible impact on both Daenerys and Greyworm.
‘The Hound’ Sandor Clegane
He returned to King’s Landing along with Arya Stark, but rather than defeating Cersei Lannister his aim was to kill his brother Gregor Clegane.
The two of them have a troubled history, with Gregor being the one who had burned Sandor’s face in a fire when they were both young.
They finally clashed on the stairs of the Red Keep, and after several attempts to kill his brother he resorted to pushing him through the wall of the castle where they both fell to their death.
Euron Greyjoy
Euron has been a powerful character during the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, including capturing his niece Yara Greyjoy and destroying her fleet.
He also had sex with Cersei Lannister and then killed Rhaegal in episode four, one of Daenerys’s two remaining dragons.
Euron met his end when he challenged Jaime Lannister to a fight after the destruction of his fleet.
He manages to stab Jaime a couple of times, but is ultimately defeated when he is stabbed through the stomach with Jamie’s sword.
Lyanna Mormont
The young leader of House Mormont was a strong figure throughout the later seasons.
She remained loyal to the Starks and was one of the first to call Jon Snow King in the North.
In the end Lyanna Mormont went out fighting as she was grabbed by a dead giant and stabbed him in the eye with a dragonglass dagger.
She died after being crushed by the giant, but she went out in style.
Eddison Tollett
Edd was one of the last remaining members of the Night’s Watch who joined alongside Jon Snow in season one.
He rose up to become Lord Commander, so it was perhaps fitting that he died fighting against the White Walkers.
It was during the earlier stages of the battle when he saved Samwell Tarly’s life.
After helping Sam get back up to his feet he was then stabbed by one of the dead soldiers
‘The Mountain’ Ser Gregor Clegane
Many people would have expected The Mountain to die in season four after being stabbed multiple times with a poisoned spear.
Instead his was saved by Qyburn who carried out questionable experimentation to keep him alive and as strong as he was before.
He finally clashed with his brother Sandor Clegane during episode five and despite numerous attempts to kill him, The Mountain remained unhurt.
After stabbing him through the face with a blade, The Hound realised that the only way to kill him would be to push him off the Red Keep and to the ground below, killing them both in the process.
Beric Dondarrion
He had been brought back to life on numerous occasions by his friend Thors of Myr, but he was on his own during his final battle.
Beric died while protecting Arya Stark from an attack by the army of the dead.
Following his death Melisandre told Arya that he had fulfilled his destiny by protecting her, and that was the reason why he was brought back to life on several occasions.
Arya then went on to become the person who killed the Night King.
Varys
Episode five saw Varys’s scheming finally catch up with him as he started to plot against Daenerys Targaryen, after deciding that Jon Snow would be the better choice for the ruler of Westeros.
He had been sending notes to about Jon’s true parentage across Westeros but his betrayal was discovered by Dany and he was betrayed by his friend Tyrion.
He was then sentenced to die and was burned alive by Drogon, but it’s possible that the damage has already been done.
Some fans believe that Varys may have attempted to poison Daenerys before his death.
Qyburn
He remained loyal to Cersei Lannister throughout the series and even elevated himself to the position of Hand of the Queen.
However, he met a grizzly end during episode five of the current season when his head was crushed against a wall by Ser Gregor Clegane.
The Mountain had attacked him after he tried to stop the fight against his brother The Hound, insisting that he escort Cersei out of the Red Keep instead.
Melisandre
Melisandre was one of the few characters so far this season who chose to die.
It happened at the end of episode three once the White Walker army was defeated.
Davos Seaworth had originally planned to kill Melisandre if he ever saw her again, but he did get a chance as she walked out into the snow once the fighting was done.
She then removed her necklace and she began to age as she collapsed to the ground and died.
The Night King
He was one of the main villains heading into the final season, but he was defeated in episode three – The Battle for Winterfell.
The Night King’s White Walker army descended on the castle and there were several casualties from their attack.
He was able to survive fire from Drogon and kept Jon Snow at a distance thanks to Viserys and the army of the dead.
In the end it was Arya Stark who managed to kill him thanks to her years of training.
Who is still alive Game of Thrones?
There are several key characters still alive as we head into the final episode of Game of Thrones.
Here are some of the key players in the series who are still alive.
Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys is still alive in Game of Thrones, but many fans now don’t expect her to last to the end of the series.
Episode five saw her snap and unleash fire and destruction on King’s Landing, killing many innocent civilians.
The move was something that shocked many including Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister, and it’s likely that she could pay for her decision during the final episode.
Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion has continued to put his faith in Daenerys, but he was visibly shocked and horrified when he saw Daenerys destroy King’s Landing with Drogon.
It’s not yet clear what decisions he will make in the final episode, but he will have to tread lightly to avoid any backlash from his Queen.
It’s possible that he could form an alliance with others who don’t agree with what she did, but only if he gets the chance.
Jon Snow
Surviving the White Walker army was the biggest concern for Jon Snow at the start of season eight.
Now he knows his true parentage and discovered that he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
Despite claiming he doesn’t want the position, it has had an effect on his relationship with Daenerys and many are starting to feel that he would be the better ruler for Westeros.
After seeing the destruction that Dany caused in King’s Landing, he might finally be convinced that taking the crown is the right thing for him to do.
Arya Stark
Arya has already acheived one of the biggest high-points in the series when she killed the Night King in episode three.
Since then she has been on a mission to complete her kill list, with Cersei Lannister being her number one target.
She was eventually talked out of it by The Hound, but now her attention might be turning towards someone else.
Arya experienced first-hand the destruction of King’s Landing at the hands of Daenerys, and now she might be out for revenge.
Sansa Stark
Sansa has been suspicious of Daenerys ever since she met her, and she revealed Jon Snow’s secret to Tyrion knowing that the news would start to spread across Westeros.
She has secured her position as the Lady of Winterfell, but it’s unlikely that she will form an alliance with Dany.
When news of the destruction of King’s Landing spreads north, it’s possible that she could send her army south to stop Daenerys’s reign.
Bran Stark
Bran has been a mysterious figure since returning from the beyond the Wall, and his purpose has been quite vague, other than being a target of the Night King.
His ability to see in the past made it possible to verify Jon’s true parents, and his knowledge of the past makes him a useful resource for the people of Westeros.
It’s possible that he could have another purpose heading into the final episode of the series, and his powers might make him a useful ally if the north decide to rebel against Dany.
Brienne of Tarth
The last time we saw Brienne was in episode four when she was left heartbroken after Jaime Lannister left her to head back to King’s Landing and reunite with Cersei.
It’s not yet clear where the future lies for her, but she has sworn to protect and serve Sansa Stark, which is why she remains in Winterfell.
If Sansa needs her help to take down Daenerys and make Jon the King, then Brienne may still have a part to play.
Davos Seaworth
Davos has been loyal to Jon Snow for several seasons now, and fought alongside him during the battle at King’s Landing.
Like Jon he was visibly shocked at what he saw when Daenerys unleashed her dragon on the city.
It’s possible that he could turn against the Queen, or step away from the politics of the Iron Throne along with Jon Snow.
