A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 5 finally leaned into the violence and gore that fans have witnessed in the Game of Thrones franchise. Dunk faces a Trial of the Seven and fights tooth and nail for his life, although he has never actually fought in a war before. In a new interview, showrunner Ira Parker discussed why it was filmed like an “old Western shootout.”
Quick read:
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner stated that the fight sequence was intentionally Western.
- The entire fight scene is from Dunk’s point of view.
- The audience can see the terror and isolation Dunk feels as he charges into the fight.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner opened up about the fight sequence in episode 5
From the get-go, the fight is brutal. Dunk feels too shocked to move at first. Even after charging into the ground, he is not fighting like the knight he is. That, however, does not tone down the mercilessness of it all, as the other knights charge towards one another in full force. In Inside the Episode for episode 5, Ira Parker discussed the Western feeling in the scene.
Parker explained, “The tension just continues to build. I wanted it to have that feel like old Westerns when the two gunslingers were going to finally do it, and then they choose pistols at dawn. […] The main directive was to have everything feel violently in Dunk’s POV.” The creators have meticulously crafted the series so that the audience experiences events exactly as Dunk does, and that also shows in the fight.
Producer Owen Harris on how Dunk felt isolated
Dunk had come to Ashford Meadow, hoping to take part in the tourney to prove himself as a true knight. He was not expecting to pick a fight with a Targaryen prince and potentially lose his life. The first time he puts on the armour Steely Pate made for him is when he has to fight in a Trial of the Seven.
When Dunk puts on the helmet, he feels claustrophobic and scared as he sees the fight unfold. Owen Harris explained, “The view out of the helmet that felt incredibly claustrophobic and trapped. And also, the fog feels sinister. All of these sorts of layers just isolate Dunk because his life is now at stake.” It takes him a moment to jump into action, while Egg cheers him on from the stands. The fight ultimately ended in Dunk’s favour, but a Targaryen paid the price for it.
