Mysaria, also called Lady Misery is a role enacted by Sonoya Mizuno in House of the Dragon season 2. Her character is full of suspense and dilemma. Her relationship with Rhaenyra has found a dynamic, dissimilar to how they first met, which was not this kind of open frankness and honesty and taking each other at face value. Both women are equally tormented and underestimated by the burdens of the patriarchal structure.

Mysaria and Rhaenyra’s trust in each other

These are the two characters, who at first are deeply suspicious of one another and then develop a form of trust due to the vulnerability suffered in life and also experiencing similar feelings about Daemon. Both have gone through equal levels of emotional ups and downs.

Mysaria knows Rhaenyra is desperate and looking for a sympathetic female voice in her life. She herself faced adversities including betrayal from her father. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Sonoya Mizuno explains her character saying,

“When you’ve been through really horrific things in your deep past, you are able to, or the only way maybe you are able to talk about them is with a level of subdued emotion. There was definitely that idea of it not feeling in any way manipulative, but this is a statement of fact.”

Mysaria confides in Rhaenyra, far from being manipulative

Mysaria makes the Queen understand the power of smallfolk, she is a kind of off-council hand to Rhaenyra. She thinks that Rhaenyra is steadfast and worthy of becoming a queen. The White Worm herself has experienced a lot of trauma from her childhood and thus very well knows Smallfolk’s suffering.

Sonoya Mizuno tries to put light on the thoughts of her role of Mysaria, by explaining that it’s not about Mysaria facing the trauma alone, there is a scar everywhere and this world is cruel and cold. That’s why she is supporting Rhaenyra and not manipulating her.

“This is what happened to me, and this is why I don’t trust people, and this is the sort of thing that happens to all sorts of small folk, and this is why they don’t trust people. This is why we need you. It was very much about not making it about Mysaria, but making it about Rhaenyra, because it’s it’s still a rally for her, it’s still Mysaria campaigning for Rhaenyra.”
