After spending years away from leading a television series, Emilia Clarke is ready to step back into the spotlight with a brand new spy thriller. The former Game of Thrones star has officially signed on to headline PONIES, marking her return to television in a major capacity. Clarke’s decision to take on this high-stakes role reveals just how carefully she selects her projects these days—and what finally convinced her that this one was worth her time.

Why This Role Felt Like Destiny

When asked what convinced her to take on the lead role in PONIES, Clarke was remarkably candid with People Magazine: “This was meant to be.” She didn’t stop there, explaining that her decision came down to one undeniable factor. “It was definitely like, ‘Okay, Emilia, think about this. Are we ready to dive back into this?’ But the script was undeniable,” she revealed to the outlet.

The 39-year-old actress credits the creative minds behind the show—creators David Iserson and Susanna Fogel, alongside executive producer Jessica Rhoades—for sealing the deal. “I loved them. I loved them from the first moment we met,” Clarke emphasized, speaking to the caliber of storytellers she surrounded herself with.

A Chemistry Forged Over Zoom

Clarke plays Bea (an undercover CIA operative), starring opposite Haley Lu Richardson (as Twila) in this spy thriller set in Soviet Union-era Moscow. The two widows convince the CIA to let them become operatives after their husbands are mysteriously killed. But what truly sealed the deal for Clarke wasn’t just the script or the creators—it was her costar.

“And then getting to build the cast out and having Haley be my sister and my partner in crime, yeah, this was meant to be,” she told People Magazine. The chemistry between the two actresses clicked immediately during a Zoom meeting, with Clarke noting it’s been “easy-peasy from day one.”
